Switchcraft Review Summary

PROS:

  • Makes switching to new energy providers regularly incredibly easy
  • Is free to the customer

CONS:

  • Doesn’t cover the whole market of energy suppliers
  • You are likely to get a cheaper deal through a comparison site or switching direct

What is Switchcraft?

Switchcraft is an auto switching energy service. When you sign up for their service, they will search the market for a better deal than the one you are currently on. If you decide to go ahead, they will continue to scan the market for the best deal for you every year and automatically switch you when a saving can be made. This means customers don’t get stuck paying high-rate standard tariffs.

How does Switchcraft work?

To get started with Switchcraft, you simply need your email, address and postcode. Switchcraft will then look up your current supplier and energy usage. The great news is to use the service, you don’t even need to dig out a bill! If you need to change the details it identifies, you can do this manually. Switchcraft will then show you the top deals available to you. If you decide to go ahead and switch, Switchcraft will need to take a few more details from you and your bank details if you have a credit meter. Once you’ve signed up, Switchcraft’s team will handle the energy switch from beginning to end on your behalf. After the switch is complete, they will continue to search the market for you, and will be in touch when a better deal is available, and switch you again to restart the auto switching process.

How will I know when I have switched suppliers?

Switched will keep you updated by SMS or email throughout the switching process, so you will know once the switch has completed. You should also hear from your new supplier within three weeks of initiating the switch. For subsequent switches, Switchcraft will let you know once they have found you a better deal. You don’t need to do anything to go ahead, but just be aware you need to contact them if there’s any reason you do not want to go ahead. You have a 14-day cooling-off period once a switch has started, when you may cancel.

Will I always get moved to a cheaper supplier?

Yes, Switchcraft will always seek to move you to a better deal. On their website, it states if you are currently benefiting from the best deal, they will tell you and you will not be switched until a saving can be made. Switchcraft will continue to search the market and will notify you when a better deal becomes available.

Is Switchcraft free?

Yes, Switchcraft is completely free to use for customers.

How does Switchcraft make money?

Switchcraft are able to offer a free service because the suppliers they work with will pay them a commission or fee for facilitating the switch to them. What this means is you will only get results from suppliers who are willing to pay the fee to Switchcraft, and this may not be the whole market.

How much money will Switchcraft save me?

On their website, Switchcraft states that they save the average customer an average of £268. Depending on which tariff you are switching from, it could be considerably more.

Which suppliers does Switchcraft use?

We can determine from their website that Switchcraft works with the following suppliers:

  • Utility Warehouse
  • Igloo
  • Moneyplus energy
  • Isupply energy
  • Eon
  • Scottish Power
  • Zebra Power
  • Nabah Energy
  • N Power
  • OVO
  • British Gas
  • Peoples Energy Company
  • Green
  • Orbit Energy
  • Spark
  • Goto energy
  • So energy
  • Simplicity
  • Coop Energy
  • PFP Energy
  • Engie
  • Tonik
  • Utilita
  • Together Energy
  • iSupplyEnergy

This list is not exhaustive, and we believe that Switchcraft works with around 50 suppliers currently, but this will be variable.

What is Switchcraft’s customer service like?

Switchcraft collects feedback predominantly through feefo, and they have a score of 4.9/5, with most customers giving them 5 stars and a few 4 stars. From what we can see, email is the only method of communication if you want to contact the Switchcraft team. There is no phone number available on their website to contact customer services, which might not appeal to everyone.

What do other reviews say about Switchcraft?

On TrustPilot, Switchcraft does not do quite as well. They score only 2.9 out of 5, with 50% of reviewers rating them as bad. Complaints varied from customers not being able to get a reply from customer service. Customers were switched to a supplier that ceased trading and not cancelled switches when requested. Some also reported being switched to a more expensive tariff. And a handful being faced with a huge bill after the switch. However, 37% of customers do rate them as excellent. The customers who gave this rating say they had a smooth switch and saved money. Others said it was a very quick and easy platform to use.

On Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert forum, the reviews are mixed with some customers saying they are achieving genuine savings. Others are not so pleased that they have been moved to suppliers with not very good customer service, and are struggling to get a resolution from Switchcrafts’s customer services.

You can see on TrustPilot that Switchcraft does take the time to reply to negative reviews, which shows they do want to reach out and communicate with those customers who have not had the most positive experiences.

How is the Switchcraft website?

The website is very easy to use. Once you choose to sign up, the process is very quick, taking around 3-5 minutes. Switchcraft even looks up your current energy supplier and usage itself. So you don’t have to input this information. The website will then show you a selection of the best available deals, and as a customer, you can view and select the one that best suits your needs. Once you press accept, Switchcraft will take care of the rest of your switch and take care of communications between your old and new suppliers. It’s a very clear and easy to use platform.

How does the Switchcraft login/portal work?

Once you are a member, you can log in to your account to view your current energy deal or any upcoming offers. From here, you can also update your address and contact details, or change your membership with Switchcraft, as well as manage any preferences for your next switch.

How to cancel/leave Switchcraft

To cancel your Switchcraft account, you simply need to email HELLO@SWITCHCRAFT.CO.UK. Once your account has been cancelled, they should confirm the cancellation by return.

Can I trust Switchcraft? Is it safe to use?

Yes, Switchcraft is a safe company to use. They store all your data in a cloud technology, which uses encryption to keep all its customers’ personal data secure. Although some customers have had a bumpy experience, they also have many customers who are happy with their service. No one has reported the service is unsafe to use.

How does Switchcraft compare to comparison sites?

Comparison sites, such as Money Supermarket, Compare The Market and GoCompare allow you to search and compare all the energy deals to your address. Some will even manage the switch for you once you select a favourable deal. However, that’s where things end. With auto switching services like Switchcraft, they will continue to search the market after your deal ends, and automatically switch your energy supply again in the future. Keeping you on a competitive tariff that saves you money. With comparison websites, you need to remember to search again once your deal ends, and manually switch yourself. Some comparison websites will remind you a year after switching that it’s time to compare again, but nothing will happen automatically.

Are Switchcraft any good?

Reviews are mixed. However, it appears when a switch goes smoothly, customers rate them very well. Where they seem to fall short is when it comes to dealing with unexpected problems, such as billing issues or the switch not going through. If you take an average of their score on Feefo and their TrustPilot reviews, they seem to come out good in most cases. It seems that as long as the switch goes without a hitch, you could save money.

Are there any alternatives to Switchcraft?

Yes. There are several other auto switching services out there, such as Look After My Bills, Switchd, Bill Buddy and Flipper. All these offer a similar auto switching service to Switchcraft. Flipper, Switchd, and Weflip offer a paid service. While this might not sound as appealing as the free service Switchcraft, Look After My Bills and BillBuddy offer, it does mean that as a customer you get to understand all the energy deals on the market, and not simply those that are willing to pay a commission to the auto switching company. Using a free service may mean you miss out on seeing some deals. However, you need to consider if it’s worth the monthly charge to you.

Is Switchcraft the best energy auto switching service?

It really depends on what is important to you. We can’t say whether it’s the best, but it is down to personal preference. Some customers will swear by it. Others haven’t enjoyed their experience with Switchcraft. The reviews are mixed, but the platform does appear very easy to use and offers customers some notable savings. It is worth running a check in a spare 5 minutes, and perhaps comparing to one of the competitor services, to ascertain which one can offer the best deal to you. It’s also worth considering if you would prefer to pay a fee to one of the other auto switching services in order to see the whole market.

Switchcraft contact number and details

On their website, Switchcraft only supply their email address for customer support, and that is: hello@switchcraft.co.uk

Yes. Switchcraft only deals with switching your electricity and gas supply.

How to sign up for Switchcraft?

You can sign up from their homepage. Once you’ve selected the best deal for your home, you’ll need to answer a few more details and enter your billing details for your new supplier. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. Once you have agreed to go ahead with the switch, Switchcraft will handle the rest. They will keep you updated by email throughout the switch by email, so you are always in the loop.

Do I need to cancel with my old supplier?

No. Switchcraft will pass over the details of your original supplier to the new one, so the contract with them can be cancelled. Once your new contract starts, you will receive a final bill from your old supplier, and this will mean your contract with them has ended.

Can you use Switchcraft as a tenant?

If you are a tenant and responsible for paying the utility bills yourself, there’s no reason you shouldn’t use Switchcraft. Your landlord may have a preferred supplier, so do check before switching. In most cases, landlords are happy for you to change supplier or change back to their preferred supplier when you move out of the property. If in doubt, contact your landlord or letting agent.

What happens if you move home with Switchcraft?

When you move home, you just need to sign up to the service again with your new address.

Hi, I'm Rob and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project 5 years ago when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I spent have a lot of time (too much some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy related topics which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
