How to get an Octopus Energy heat pump (2024)

Are you looking for an environmentally friendly way to keep your home warm and reduce your energy costs? An Octopus Energy heat pump could be the perfect solution.

Octopus is currently offering a fantastic deal on its heat pump installation with relatively low upfront costs and long-term savings. With this in mind, let’s explore how you can get yourself a quality heat pump at an unbeatable price from Octopus Energy.

What is a heat pump?

Simply put, a heat pump works by transferring warm air from one place to another, instead of generating heat through combustion like a traditional boiler. This makes it not only more energy-efficient but also a more environmentally friendly choice for heating your home.

The pump will absorb the air from outside, then convert it into a fluid which is then heated with a compressor. This is then sent round your home through radiators, to your water tank etc.

A heat pump can be 4x more efficient than existing boilers and produce 73% less carbon emissions. Another bonus to heat pumps is they generally have a life span of 20 years, twice as long as a standard boiler. Source: Octopus Energy.

What types of heat pumps are available from Octopus Energy?

Currently, Octopus only offer air-source heat pumps. Ground source heat pumps are another type of heat pump available in the UK but they are far less popular and not available through the Octopus scheme. You can find out the difference between the two in our air source vs ground source heat pump article.

How can I get an Octopus Energy heat pump?

If you have decided you would like a heat pump or would just like a free quote, then this can be done easily through the Octopus website.

All you need to do is complete a simple form (which takes less than 5 minutes). The form will ask for standard information like your name, address, the size of your house and whether you have the space to have a heat pump installed.

Once you have completed this, Octopus will start the process to provide you with an estimate of the cost. You will not receive an instant estimate but should receive an email follow-up within a couple of days.

If Octopus have availability in your area and deems your property to be a good fit for installation, then they will send around a surveyor to do an in-depth assessment of the property 9this can take around 3 hours). You will then be provided with a quote.

If you accept the quotation, then you can book your installation. The installation of your heat pump should take around 3-5 days. If you don’t like the quotation then you can leave the process at no cost to yourself.

What do I have to do to qualify for an Octopus heat pump?

To qualify for an Octopus heat pump, there are a few requirements to meet, including a suitable property size, space for a heat pump to be installed outside and space inside for a hot water cylinder. Interestingly, you don’t have to be an existing Octopus customer to qualify.

How much does a heat pump cost to install in the UK?

Heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as a renewable alternative to traditional heating systems. However, one of the biggest concerns for homeowners is the cost of installation.

While there’s no definitive answer to this question, the cost of installing a heat pump can range from £7,000 to £18,000 depending on various factors such as the type of system, the size of the property, and the complexity of the installation.

Octopus claim that the majority of their quotes for the full installation including the removal of your existing boiler etc are less than the national average of about £8,000. If you have a standard installation with an existing boiler, then the costs to you could be as low as £3,000 after including the £5,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

While this may seem like a significant investment, heat pumps are known for their efficiency and can represent significant savings on energy bills over time. Heat pump users can save over £700 a year, making the payback period relatively short.

Ultimately, the cost of installation should be viewed as a long-term investment in your home’s value and sustainability.

What does the installation of the heat pump include?

Even at £3,000, you are still paying a lot of money to change from your existing heating setup to a heat pump. These costs include more than just the heat pump itself however, the price when you go through Octopus Energy includes:

  • The home survey to work out your initial quote and to check if your home is suitable
  • A leading brand air source heat pump
  • A new hot water cylinder
  • Copper pipe and cabling to connect everything
  • The labour time to install the new system (up to 9 days)
  • A flush of your system to ensure it runs smoothly
  • A 5-year warranty on all parts and labour

Should I get a heat pump installed through Octopus Energy?

In short, installing a heat pump from Octopus Energy is an excellent choice for anyone looking to reduce their energy bills and their carbon footprint. If you would like an air source heat pump, you will struggle to find a way of getting installed any cheaper than through this scheme.

Not only do heat pumps provide a more efficient and sustainable heating system, but they are also relatively easy to install and maintain. Additionally, the benefits of having a heat pump installed extend beyond just cost savings – it has been proven that with the correct usage and maintenance, a heat pump can replace your existing heating system entirely.

From reviews on the various services Octopus provide, it is clear they offer comprehensive support and high standards of customer satisfaction in everything they do and it is unlikely this scheme will be any different.

Hi, I'm Rob and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project 5 years ago when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I spent have a lot of time (too much some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy related topics which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
