Octopus Energy Review Summary
Founded in 2011 Octopus Energy, like many other similar energy suppliers that were founded around the time as a strong focus on providing a more green and eco-friendly energy solution. Octopus Energy provides energy services for both homes and businesses and offers both gas and electricity.
But while it was founded in 2011 they only started taking customers in 2016. Octopus Energy proudly tells visitors to its website about its an innovator in solar technology and solar farms although it was only in May of this year that it had 100% renewable electricity on all its tariffs.
However its gas is well about the national average when it comes to renewable energy levels. My Octopus Energy review does indeed highlight the impressive lengths Octopus Energy have gone to, to ensure a more green and eco-friendly service.
Octopus Energy is still relatively new when it comes to providing energy to customers but they certainly have some impressive feedback and review scores. They operate throughout the UK and provide a number of different tariffs.
Octopus Energy describe themselves as a “new breed of energy supplier” but do they live up to that promise? Let’s take a closer look at all the important areas you need to know about with my in-depth Octopus Energy review and find out!
Octopus Energy provides a wide array of different tariffs and to be honest some customers might find the wide-variety of options a little confusing. As part of my Octopus Energy review I checked out many different tariffs and some of the most notable ones are their range of green tariffs with 100% renewable energy.
There are also flexible plans and tariffs designed for both domestic customers and businesses. Many of Octopus Energy’s tariffs are for either 12 months or 24 months as well. Below I’ve listed some of the main points to consider with Octopus Energy’s tariffs.

Which awarded Octopus Energy 5 stars for their value for money and TustPilot currently gives them a very impressive score of 9.4. Many of the reviews also highlight Octopus Energy’s fair prices and good value, with many reviewers saying they swapped due to the better prices on offer from Octopus Energy. My Octopus Energy review also found that their referral bonus was incredibly popular with customers with them offering £50 credit for both parties after a successful referral.
Many of the previously mentioned reviews on TrustPilot are incredibly positive and not just because of their fair prices either! 96% of the reviews on TrustPilot rate Octopus Energy as excellent or great with only 3% of reviewers labelling their service poor or bad.
Customer service is another highly lauded part of Octopus Energy’s service. Which also found them to be incredibly fast especially when responding to emails. Although phone calls were not as impressive when it came to waiting times. Which also came in 1st out of the 36 energy suppliers surveyed during the annual Which survey.
This officially makes it a Which Recommended Provider (WRP) which is another indicator of its excellent customer service.
Citizens Advice awarded Octopus Energy 4.15 out of 5 and putting them in an impressive 3rd place. Octopus Energy did score very highly, which is even more impressive when you consider they have only been providing energy services for a few years.
I’ve already talked about some of the great reviews Octopus Energy has received in my Octopus Energy review. But let’s break down the main points, shall we? TrustPilot is overflowing with positive reviews with many citing Octopus Energy’s simplicity, prices, and customer services as the main benefits.
Which echoed many of these sentiments although it didn’t have enough data to rate Octopus Energy’s phone or online customer service or their complaints handling performance. The Citizens Advice website was also positive with Octopus Energy scoring highly with 4.15 out of 5.
The Citizens Advice also found that Octopus Energy only had 61.2 complaints for every 100 thousand customers, which is relatively small. Octopus Energy also received great marks from uSwitch. They were even awarded 5 stars in the 2018 survey and received the Energy Supplier of the Year Award!
Octopus Energy’s website is certainly serviceable although while this will come down to personal opinion I have to be honest and say its design just isn’t the most user-friendly in my opinion. Although they do have a very impressive help and support section complete with an in-depth FAQ so they certainly get points for that.
Finding contact information is also very easy and their online customer portal is something that is positively reviewed by customers. There is also an app for Octopus Energy that lets you scan meter readings, view account balances, change payment information and view your billing history.
In many ways, it works just like their online customer portal. The bad news is this app is currently only available for IOS devices. Some reviews for the app also state that it is a little buggy and not compatible with the latest iOS devices.
How green is Octopus Energy’s energy?
Like many of the more recent energy suppliers Octopus Energy as a very strong emphasis on providing a more eco-friendly service. When you consider their history with solar power and solar farms this isn’t too surprising.
But how green are they? Thankfully finding out information about Octopus Energy’s fuel mix and their green credentials is very easy. From May 2018 all the electricity provided by Octopus Energy is 100% renewable. However, their fuel mix for gas is a little more varied.
Their gas fuel mix is 69% renewable, 18% natural gas, 6% coal, 5% nuclear and finally 2% is classed as other. It might not be quite as impressive as their current electricity fuel mix but with 69% renewables, it is still far above the national average.
As mentioned previously the Citizens Advice website found that Octopus Energy only had 61.2 complaints for every 100 thousand customers. This is very small and does show that Octopus Energy provides a high level of customer service. And while there are a few complaints on websites like TrustPilot the Octopus Energy team does seem to reply to negative reviews quickly to try to help and provide assistance if they can.

Logging into the Octopus Energy website is simple and easy and if you have the app (IOS devices only) you can also log onto your account using that. The online customer portal allows you to send meter readings, check your billing history, update payment methods, check account balances and much more.
Do they work with pre-payment meters?
No, currently Octopus Energy doesn’t work with pre-payment meters. However you can still join them but you will need to get your meter replaced first. On their FAQs section, Octopus Energy recommends calling your existing supplier to get them to switch your meter first before applying to join them.
Do they accept Economy 7?
Yes, Octopus Energy do accept Economy 7 meters.
Are they signed up to the Warm Home Discount?
According to their FAQs section, Octopus Energy does not currently offer the Warm House Discount. Although they do state they try to make their prices as low as possible.
Are they signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee?
Yes, Octopus Energy is covered by the Energy Switch Guarantee, which should make switching to them much easier.
What billing options are available?
One of the potential downside to Octopus Energy’s service is that they only accept direct debit payments. They state that this is done to ensure everyone pays the same way and guarantee a more simple and fair system.
Do they offer a smart meter? Do they accept smart meters?
Yes Octopus Energy do offer smart meters.
Do they charge exit fees?
Octopus energy will not charge exit/ termination fees.
Will they offer to pay a customer’s exit fees when they join them?
Yes, possibly Octopus Energy state that customers wishing to switch to them can defer their exit fees.
Do they offer any incentives to customers to refer friends/family?
Yes, Octopus energy does offer a reward for referrals which is detailed in-depth on their website. As mentioned previously the referral rewards are certainly very popular as they are highlighted in a number of their reviews.
What happens if you move home whilst with them?
The process for moving home with Octopus Energy is relatively simple and all laid out on this page of their website. Octopus Energy do also provide extra-support if you don’t know who your new home’s energy supplier is and they can also help trace them for you as well.
Do they mention about the Priority Services Register?
