Our Methodology

Page last reviewed and updated: 29th August 2025

Welcome to our methodology page. We believe in total transparency, and this page explains exactly how we research, analyse, and rate every energy supplier on our site.

Our goal is to go beyond the headline price. While price is important, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. A cheap deal isn’t worth much if you’re stuck with inaccurate bills, an impossible-to-use app, or a customer service team that never answers the phone.

Our reviews are designed to give you a complete, 360-degree view of a supplier, focusing on what it’s actually like to be their customer. Here are the core areas we investigate for every single supplier.

We combine official data, real customer feedback, and our own analysis to score suppliers across five critical categories:

1. Customer Service & Complaint Handling

This is often the most important factor after price. We want to know how well a supplier looks after its customers, especially when things go wrong.

  • Where we get our data: We analyse the official complaints data published by the energy regulator, Ofgem, and the supplier star ratings from the independent consumer charity, Citizens Advice. We also incorporate long-term satisfaction scores from major surveys by bodies like Which?.
  • Why it matters: This data tells you how quickly a supplier resolves problems and how likely you are to have issues in the first place. A supplier with low complaint volumes and fast resolution times is a sign of a well-run company.

2. Real Customer Feedback

Official data is crucial, but it doesn’t always capture the day-to-day experience of being a customer.

  • Where we get our data: We read through hundreds, sometimes thousands, of real-world customer reviews on impartial platforms like Trustpilot and the official App Store.
  • Why it matters: We don’t just look at the overall score. We look for patterns. Are customers repeatedly praising the simple billing? Or are they consistently complaining about long call wait times? This gives us real-world insight into a supplier’s strengths and weaknesses.

3. Pricing, Tariffs & Value for Money

We check for more than just a low price; we look for fairness and transparency.

  • How we analyse it: We conduct our own price comparisons using a consistent set of criteria to see how a supplier stacks up. We also scrutinise their tariff information for hidden costs, high exit fees, and how clearly they explain their pricing.
  • Why it matters: The cheapest deal might come with a catch, like prices that shoot up after a fixed term. We highlight these details so you can be sure you’re getting genuinely good value.

4. Website & Digital Experience

In today’s world, you should be able to manage your energy account easily online or on your phone.

  • How we analyse it: We explore each supplier’s website and mobile app. We check the process for submitting a meter reading, viewing your usage, finding help guides, and contacting support.
  • Why it matters: A user-friendly app or website can save you a lot of time and hassle. We let you know which suppliers have invested in a great digital experience.

5. Green Credentials & Ethics

For many people, choosing a supplier that is good for the planet is a top priority.

  • How we analyse it: We investigate where a supplier’s energy comes from. We check if their “100% renewable” electricity is backed by their own generation (like wind or solar farms) or just by purchasing certificates. We also look at their commitment to green gas and other environmental schemes.
  • Why it matters: This helps you see beyond the marketing slogans and choose a supplier that genuinely aligns with your values.

Energy-Review.co.uk is a reader-supported site. To keep our research free, we are funded by affiliate links. This means we may earn a small commission if you switch to certain suppliers through our site, at no extra cost to you.

This funding model never influences our findings, ratings, or recommendations.

Our process is built on the data we gather. If a supplier offers a high commission but has terrible customer service, we will say so. Our primary commitment is to you, our reader. Your trust is more important than anything else.

We hope this gives you a clear picture of the work that goes into every review. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
