100Green Review Summary
Who are Green Energy UK?
Green Energy UK were formed in 2001 and are a relatively small energy supplier based in Hertfordshire.
As their name suggests, their main focus is supplying environmentally friendly energy. However, they go further than most environmentally friendly energy suppliers because Green Energy UK also supply EKOenergy electricity and gas.
Green Energy UK are not the cheapest energy supplier, but their customer service is excellent and if the environment is important to you they are certainly worth considering.
What tariffs do Green Energy UK offer?
Green Energy UK offer two tariffs. Both of these are fixed rate tariffs with no exit fees. One of the tariffs is for standard green electricity and gas and the other is for EKOenergy electricity and gas. There is no variable rate tariff option.
They offer electricity-only tariffs or dual fuel tariffs, but there is no discount available to customers who decide to use Green Energy UK for both fuels. An Economy 7 tariff is also available.
Green Energy UK do not offer a specific tariff for electric vehicle owners. They did have a partnership with Source East to operate a network of electric charging points but that network closed down in 2017.
Green Energy UK offer a ‘feed-in’ tariff, but as they are a voluntary ‘feed-in’ tariff supplier this tariff is only available to customers who are using Green Energy UK for their energy supply.
How do Green Energy UK compare on price?
Green Energy UK is one of the most environmentally friendly energy suppliers in the UK, although that comes at a cost. In fact, OFGEM has given them an exemption which means that they are not required to adhere to the price cap that restricts how much they can charge.
Customers who opt for the EKOenergy tariff will pay more than customers who opt for the standard tariff because EKOenergy suppliers pay money into EKOenergy’s Climate Fund to finance renewable energy projects.
What do other Green Energy UK reviews say?
Green Energy UK score 4.4 out of 5 stars on TrustPilot, with 86% of the reviewers rating the company as either great or excellent.
The main thing that the reviewers praise is their experience with Green Energy UK’s customer service, with the fact that it is easy it is for customers to submit meter readings also being mentioned.
A small number of complaints have mostly arisen from customers who had failed to supply regular meter readings and when they finally supplied a reading, they discovered that their monthly direct debits were not sufficient and so they had built up a sizeable debt. The customers could have avoided this by providing meter readings on a regular basis.
Green Energy UK are quick to respond to their TrustPilot reviews, addressing any problems directly when they arise rather than simply using a generic, template-based response.
Which? and Citizen’s Advice do not have sufficient data to produce an official assessment of the company.
How green is Green Energy UK’s energy?
As their name suggests, Green Energy UK’s energy is among the most environmentally friendly energy suppliers in the UK. In fact, we think they are one of the best green energy suppliers.
Its standard electricity is 100% renewable and its standard gas is 100% certified green, but Green Energy UK goes further because it also offers EKOenergy. In addition to coming from renewable sources, EKOenergy must be generated in a manner that is friendly to nature and EKOenergy suppliers must contribute towards EKOenergy’s Climate Fund which finances renewable energy projects all over the world.
What is Green Energy UK’s customer service like?
Green Energy UK’s website does not have a live chat feature but it boasts that its phone lines are answered in an average of seven seconds during its opening hours and customers get through to a real person rather than having to work their way through a set of automated menus first.
Its phone lines are open for longer than most other energy suppliers on weekdays, although those phone lines are not open on weekends.
Green Energy UK receives very few complaints. Between 2016 and 2019 it dealt with 434,595 customer enquiries and of those, only 118 resulted in complaints.
What is Green Energy UK’s website/app like?
Green Energy UK’s website contains a lot of information, but it is not always obviously where to find that information. The lack of a search facility does not help.
One useful feature is a bereavement notification form. Losing a loved one or a family member is never easy, so the fact that Green Energy UK has provided an easy way to deal with the energy supply if you find yourself in this situation is a nice touch.
You can also use Green Energy UK’s website to submit meter readings, see your current balance and your usage, and make payments or amend your personal details.
Green Energy UK does not currently have an app.
What billing options are available?
Green Energy UK takes payment via monthly direct debit, although you can also make one-off payments via the Green Energy UK website.
There is a choice of either fixed or variable monthly direct debits. For both, the first four months are based on the national average energy consumption figures. After four months your actual energy consumption is assessed and your future direct debits will be based on that figure.
For those that have opted for fixed direct debits, that consumption figure will be used for the next twelve months after which it will be reviewed. If you feel that your consumption has changed, you can apply for a review of your monthly direct debit amount earlier.
If you have opted for variable direct debits you need to supply monthly meter readings. Then your monthly direct debit will be based on your actual energy consumption. This can mean that you end up paying more in the winter months when energy consumption tends to be higher, whereas with a fixed monthly direct debit the amount you pay remains consistent throughout the year.
Green Energy UK operates paperless billing by default, but customers can request that a quarterly bill is posted to them.

Switch to Green Energy UK
The easiest way to switch to Green Energy UK is through a comparison website. This will allow you to check if Green Energy UK is one of the cheapest suppliers for you (tariffs vary based on your area) and will allow you to quickly and easily switch to them.
I was switched into Green Energy by SwitchD. I immediatey said no as I had just moved house and wanted to stay with the house’s existing supplier, SoEnergy.
I cancelled the DD for Green Energy that had been set up without my approval. Green Energy has failed to respond to email requests to cancel the Erroneous transfer. When phoning I am told I am 35th in the queue.
Switchd, who made the switch to Green Energy, have not been able to help in sorting this out. I have subsequently cancelled my subscription to SwitchD. . I am now in contact with OFGEM over the unauthorised switch and Green Energy s failure to respond to communications.
I would not recommend this supplier because I have found it impossible to communicate with them.
