Who are Better Energy
Better Energy was an independent Nottinghamshire-based supplier of gas. They started trading in 2011 but went into administration in December 2019.
Preston-based PFP Energy took over Better Energy’s customers as OFGEM’s appointed Supplier of Last Resort.
Better Energy were offering a range of fixed-rate tariffs before they went into administration. They didn’t offer any variable-rate tariffs.
There was a £30 exit fee for customers leaving before the end of their contract term.
The company only offer gas. They did not supply electricity. As such, Better Energy didn’t offer a special tariff for electric vehicle owners and didn’t offer ‘feed-in’ tariffs.
Better Energy positioned itself as a cheap supplier of gas.
As you would expect, the online reviews of Better Energy are scathing, with most of the complaints relating to people who were in credit with the company when the company went into administration. Difficulties getting through to customer services are also mentioned.
Better Energy only scored two stars out of five on TrustPilot with 40% of the reviewers rating the company as Bad.

Towards the end, Better Energy’s customer service was a major source of complaints, with customers saying that they were unable to get through to the company.
In many of the online reviews in the period leading up to the company’s administration the company’s customers state that they wondered whether the company was still trading.
Better Energy’s website is no longer online.
The website has not been replaced with a holding page advising customers that the company have gone into administration and does not give contact details of the administrator or PFP Energy, OFGEM’s appointed Supplier of Last Resort.
Better Energy billed quarterly, and only online billing was available. Payment was via direct debit only. Customers could not pay by cash or cheque, although pre-payment meters were an option.
One criticism was that Better Energy wanted their customers to be three months in credit to cater for the more expensive winter months. Many people felt that was excessive.
