Is bluegreen energy going bust?

On 1st November, Ofgem announced that bluegreen energy had gone bust. The supplier had around 5,900 customers.

Who are bluegreen energy?

Bluegreen energy have been trading in the UK since June 2020 although they are part of a global group that started supplying energy in the USA in 2011 before expanding into Japan in 2016 and Europe in 2019.

They supply gas and electricity throughout the UK although they do not currently supply energy in Northern Ireland.

What tariffs do bluegreen energy offer?

Bluegreen energy offer three tariffs.

Two of those tariffs are fixed rate tariffs that are fixed for 8 and 24 months respectively. There is an exit fee if you switch to another supplier before the end of the fixed rate period. There is also a variable rate tariff with no exit fee.

These three tariffs are not available to pre-payment customers. Additionally, bluegreen energy do not offer specific tariffs for electric vehicle owners and neither do they offer ‘feed-in’ tariffs.

How do bluegreen energy compare price?

Bluegreen energy are relatively expensive compared to many of the other energy companies.

What do other bluegreen energy reviews say?

Bluegreen energy are a relative newcomer to the energy supply market so there are not many reviews of them online at the moment.

However, they score an impressive 4.2 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot from over 750 reviews, with 84% of their reviewers rating them as either good or excellent. Their app has also received positive reviews on the Google Play Store.

How green is bluegreen energy’s energy?

Bluegreen energy supply electricity from renewable sources and the gas that they supply is carbon offset.

What is bluegreen energy’s customer service like?

Bluegreen energy do not have a live chat feature on their website although they do have a contact form. They can also be contact by phone, although their call centre is only available between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.

As they are a relatively new energy supplier there is no confirmed information in terms of their response times. However, although their reviews on TrustPilot are mostly positive, the negative reviews talk about how difficult it is to contact them and how long it takes for them to respond.

What is bluegreen energy’s website/app like?

Bluegreen energy’s website is nicely laid out with most of the information it contains reasonably easy to find. It does not have a live chat feature, though.

There is an online portal that enables customers to update their personal details, submit meter readings and view their previous bills. There is also an app that lets customers do all of this as well as providing a way to chat with bluegreen energy.

The app is available on Android devices and Apple’s iOS devices. The app scores 3.9 out of five stars at the Google Play Store but there are no reviews of it on Apple’s App Store.

What billing options are available?

The only payment method offered is monthly via direct debit. The amount of each monthly payment is estimated initially, and is adjusted quarterly when customers submit their meter readings.

Depending on a customer’s credit rating, they may be required to pay an initial deposit.

Pre-payment accounts are not available, and bluegreen energy do not offer a discount for paperless billing.

Do bluegreen energy offer smart meters?

Bluegreen energy are happy to install smart meters if a customer requests one. Customers with existing smart meters can switch to bluegreen energy but their smart meters may lose their smart functionality.

Do bluegreen energy offer a recommend a friend referral scheme?

Bluegreen energy do not operate a friend referral scheme.

What happens if you move home whilst with them?

Bluegreen energy customers who are moving home should notify bluegreen energy via the bluegreen energy website or the bluegreen energy app. If they don’t do this they could be charged for any energy used by the next occupier of their previous home.

Do they offer any incentives for joining? 

Bluegreen energy do not offer any specific incentive to encourage people to switch to them.
