Octopus Energy Review Summary
Who are Octopus Energy?
Octopus Energy was founded by Greg Jackson in 2015 with a simple aim: to make energy better. In just a decade, they have grown rapidly to become the UK’s largest energy supplier. As of early 2026, they serve over 12 million accounts (roughly 25% of the market), having overtaken British Gas in domestic customer numbers.
Their growth has been fuelled by a combination of organic sign-ups and acquiring other suppliers, most notably taking on customers from Shell Energy and Bulb.
I was particularly impressed by their reputation. Octopus Energy is known for excellent customer service, fair prices, and a strong focus on innovation. They have received awards like the Uswitch Energy Supplier of the Year and have been a Which? Recommended Provider for a record-breaking eight years in a row.
Octopus Energy Review: Is Octopus a good energy supplier?
From what I’ve seen and from the experiences shared by many other customers, Octopus Energy is a great provider. They focus on renewable energy, offer competitive pricing, and keep customer satisfaction at the forefront. Their green energy tariffs and smart technology solutions are designed to reduce your carbon footprint while keeping bills low.
Reviews say it all. On TrustPilot, Octopus Energy scores an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars from over 700,000 reviews, with 90% of customers rating them as excellent. This makes them one of the best-rated suppliers among the big players.
| Rating | Percentage of reviews |
|---|---|
| Excellent | 90% |
| Great | 5% |
| Average | 1% |
| Poor | <1% |
| Bad | 3% |
And each year, Which? surveys customers. In 2025, Octopus Energy came top of 18 suppliers with an overall score of 74%.
They also won the uSwitch ‘Energy Supplier of the Year’ award for the fifth time, based on more than 17,000 responses. These figures really backed up what many of us have heard from friends and family.

What is Octopus Energy’s customer service like?
I know how important it is to have friendly and efficient customer service. Octopus Energy runs UK-based call centres that are open Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm, and on Friday until 4 pm. This might be a bit inconvenient if you’re working a 9-to-5 job, but the good news is you can always email them any day of the week.
According to Which?, customers rate their service a perfect 5 out of 5. They are among the fastest to answer the phone, typically in just over 2 minutes (some sources even say 2 minutes and 28 seconds). Emails usually get a reply within two days. I found that these quick and friendly responses really set them apart.
When it comes to emails, CitizensAdvice have found that Octopus respond to just over 87.2% of emails within 2 days.
By looking at many of the Octopus Energy reviews on TrustPilot, you can also see that generally customers’ experiences match up with these stats, with most customers praising Octopus’s customer service speed and level of response.
Support if you are struggling: The “Octo Assist” Fund
Unlike many suppliers who are hard to reach when you are in debt, Octopus runs a dedicated £30m+ “Octo Assist” fund.
If you are struggling with bills, they offer practical support beyond just payment plans. In Winter 2024/25 alone, they distributed:
- Free Electric Blankets: Thousands were distributed to help vulnerable customers stay warm without heating the whole house.
- Thermal Cameras: You can borrow one for free to find draughts in your home.
- Standing Charge Waivers: Specific financial help for those in dire need.
What energy tariffs do Octopus Energy offer?
This is where Octopus really shines. They offer two distinct types of tariffs: Standard (for everyone) and Smart (for those with smart meters).
1. Standard Tariffs
If you don’t have a smart meter, or prefer simplicity:
- Flexible Octopus: Their standard variable tariff. It generally tracks just below the Energy Price Cap, making it a fair deal that protects you from overpaying. 100% renewable electricity.
- Octopus 12M Fixed: A fixed-term contract (usually 12 months) that locks in your unit rates. Useful if you think prices might rise.
2. Smart Tariffs
If you have a smart meter, you can access these innovative tariffs, which often work out much cheaper than the Price Cap:
- Octopus Tracker: Prices change daily based on the wholesale cost of energy. Historically, this has been significantly cheaper than the Price Cap over the last 18 months.
- Agile Octopus: Electricity prices change every 30 minutes. If you can shift your usage (e.g. running the washing machine) to off-peak times or windy days, you can save a fortune. Sometimes prices even go negative, and they pay you to use power!
- Intelligent Octopus Go: The ultimate tariff for EV drivers. It gives you six hours of super-cheap electricity overnight (for your car and house) and smart-charges your car automatically.
- Cosy Octopus: Designed for Heat Pumps. It offers three “dip” periods each day with cheap rates to heat your home, alongside a standard day rate.
- Octopus Flux: A specialised import/export tariff for those with Solar Panels and a Battery, allowing you to buy cheap and sell high.
Like most domestic energy suppliers, Octopus do not currently offer a zero-standing charge energy tariff. They are, however, one of the most competitive when it comes to standing charges. You can see how they compare in our zero-standing charges guide.
Bonus for EV Drivers: The Electroverse Card
If you drive an electric vehicle, joining Octopus gets you access to the Electroverse (formerly Electric Juice).
- One Card: Access hundreds of thousands of public chargers (Ionity, Shell, Osprey, etc.) with a single card or app.
- Discounts: You often get 5-8% off the standard public charging rate just for being an Octopus home energy customer.
- One Bill: All your public charging costs are added to your home energy bill, keeping everything simple.
Do you live near a Wind Turbine? (The “Fan Club”)
Octopus has a unique local tariff called the Fan Club. If you live near one of their specific wind turbines (e.g., in Caerphilly, Halifax, or Market Weighton), you get cheaper electricity when that specific local turbine is spinning (discounts range from 20% to 50% off).
They also run “Power-ups” in specific grid areas (like the South West or Midlands). These are flash events where surplus renewable energy is so high that electricity becomes free for a few hours. You simply opt in, use your appliances, and you won’t be charged for that usage.
Are Octopus Energy cheap?
Based on my research, Octopus Energy is generally affordable. They use smart technology to cut costs and rely on renewable energy, which helps them offer lower prices compared to many traditional providers. Energy prices do change, but overall, they are one of the more budget-friendly options among the larger companies.
We have a whole post dedicated to comparing suppliers with British Gas, which will help you find out if Octopus is cheaper than British Gas.
Octopus prices per kWh (unit rate) plus standing charge
To give you an idea of the price you could be paying per kWh and for a standing charge, the rates for their cheapest fixed and cheapest variable tariffs, for both gas and electricity, are below:
Gas
| Tariff Name | Tariff Type | Price per kWh | Standing Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octopus 12M Fixed | Fixed | 5.41p | 32.79p |
| Flexible Octopus | Variable | 6.14p | 32.79p |
Electricity
| Tariff Name | Tariff Type | Price per kWh | Standing Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octopus 12M Fixed | Fixed | 24.96p | 48.12p |
| Flexible Octopus | Variable | 25.55p | 48.12p |
If you are willing to switch to a non-traditional tariff, then the Octopus Tracker tariff is generally considered to be the cheapest tariff available from any supplier. You can find our latest comparison of the cheapest gas and electricity tariffs here.
If you are joining Octopus Energy for the first time, you should also consider that you can get £50 referral credit. This can make a significant difference when comparing prices across suppliers over the year.
Octoplus Rewards Scheme
New for 2025 and 2026 is the Octoplus scheme. This is a rewards program available to any customer with a smart meter who pays by Direct Debit.
Current Octoplus Perks:
- Free Weekly Coffee: Claim a free hot drink from Greggs or Caffè Nero every week.
- Cinema Tickets: 2-for-1 tickets at Vue Cinemas.
- Free Electricity Sessions: On very windy days, Octopus often gives away “free electricity” for an hour or two.
- Spin the Wheel: Every time you submit a meter reading, you can spin a virtual wheel to win credit prizes from £1 to £512.
Even if they aren’t the cheapest on a comparison site, when you factor in referral credit and the money you can save through their extra incentives, they may work out cheaper overall.

How green is Octopus Energy?
For those who care about the environment, Octopus Energy is a standout choice. Octopus are one of our top green energy suppliers.
- 100% Renewable Electricity: All tariffs come with green electricity as standard.
- Investing in Generation: Through Octopus Energy Generation, they manage a portfolio worth billions, investing in wind farms and solar parks across Europe.
- Tech for Good: They are heavily pushing Heat Pump installations (often cheaper than a gas boiler with grants) and have their own R&D centre for green tech.
Note: Like most suppliers, they supply natural gas, which is not renewable. However, they offset this where possible and are actively trying to move customers to electric heating.
You can see where their energy comes from below:
| Fuel source | % of supply |
|---|---|
| Natural Gas | 0% |
| Nuclear | 13.6% |
| Renewables | 86.4% |
| Coal | 0% |
| Other Fuels | 0% |
Do they receive many complaints?
All energy suppliers have to publicly display their complaints data every quarter. Below, we have displayed the key complaints data for Octopus:
| Complaints per 100k customers | 560 |
| Resolved per 100k customers | 574 |
| Resolved by next working day | 47% |
| Resolved in 8 weeks | 80% |
Every energy supplier faces some complaints. With Octopus Energy, the most common issues relate to payment and billing, and occasionally, customer service. However, they are very open about these challenges and work hard to fix any problems.
Most complaints are resolved quickly, and detailed performance reports are available for those interested in the progress being made.
How good is the Octopus app?
Octopus have apps available in both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store.
The app is widely regarded as the best utility app in the UK.
I found the app incredibly user-friendly. You can view your usage by the hour, check your bills, spin the “Wheel of Fortune”, and opt in to “Saving Sessions” all from the home screen. If you have an Octopus Home Mini (a small device they send you), you can even see your energy usage in real-time, live on your phone.
For Tech Enthusiasts: Home Assistant & API
Octopus is the only UK supplier that provides an open API. This means if you use smart home software like Home Assistant, you can integrate your energy data directly.
You can automate your house to turn on the dishwasher automatically when “Agile” prices drop below 10p, or turn off the charger if prices spike. There is a huge community of developers building free tools for Octopus users.

Are Octopus on comparison websites?
Is Octopus Energy on comparison sites?
Octopus Energy usually doesn’t appear on the leading energy comparison websites like Uswitch or Compare the Market. That’s because:
- They don’t pay commission – Most comparison sites charge suppliers a fee, but Octopus prefers to keep prices low by avoiding this.
- Some tariffs change daily or hourly – Tariffs like Agile and Tracker don’t work with standard price comparison tools.
You might still see Octopus mentioned on comparison sites, but if you want to sign up, you’ll be sent to their own website to finish.
For business energy, they no longer use any comparison sites or brokers at all.
In short: if you want to see Octopus deals, go direct.

Thank you
i want to pay quarterly only when i receive the bill. do you do this transaction?
Get a smart meter and use it! Dont pay via direct debit but one off payments at the end of the month. Dont let them use your hard earned money for earning interest when your useage is less!
I’m with Octopus, off and on since they began trading.
I was not pleased last year when I had to pay 150 to switch to another tariff of theirs, The woman who dealt with the switch was abrupt.
I’m thinking of switching, using British Gas, but didn’t have a good experience with them either, which was possibly 2015. Hope they are better at customer service now.
On the whole. Octopus respond to queries quickly and are friendly. In the past I’ve told them I’m just not paying the recommended monthly payment, and offered less, sometimes paying a one off payment to clear what I owe. It’s my money and I’m not paying up front for energy I’ve not used yet.
I recently switched to Octopus Energy and was pleasantly surprised by the £50 credit offer. As an energy-conscious consumer, I appreciate the transparency and competition in the renewable energy market. Thanks for sharing this review – it’s helpful in making informed choices.
Great review! I’m considering switching to Octopus Energy and this post has given me the confidence to do so. The £50 credit offer is a great incentive. Will definitely sign up now!
Why can’t the power company’s give a price per Kilowatt. Not monthly guess estimate Philip
Hi,
I’ve recently signed up to Octopus, and immediately received £50 credit as did my friend for the referral. I then quickly swapped to the Agile tariff for electricity and Tracker for gas. All of this went very smoothly. I’d very recently moved to a smaller property and they calculated my usage. I chose to increase this to pay a bit more with the winter months coming and not having any credit built up. Again this was easy to do.
I downloaded the Octopus App and can see how much I am going to pay the following day Peru it every half hour. I have already saved about £20 last month ( October) it’s made me use the washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher at different times.
As a retired person at home during the day I’ve found it easy to use most if my appliances during much cheaper times of the day. However it will be interesting to see how high the electricity goes for peak times like Christmas Day, and whether it then remains a cheaper option for me.
Iam very happy with octopus ! The only this I don’t like is having to read. My gas and electric meters every month. I am 77 and had both knees replaced and two collapsed vertebrae’s my electric meter is in a cupboard but I need to use steps to take readings as it is so high. The gas meter is outside but is so low to the ground I’m struggling to take readings .I have a British Gas smart meter but apparently is not compatible with octopus company !
I am very disappointed with Octopus Energy. My contact needed to be renewed. They upped my energy rate then a couple of months later, did it again. They recommended the package that I accepted in good faith. I have friends who have joined Octopus energy. Yet they still have raised my rate twice in a few months. I am very very disappointed with them. Be careful with the package to accept from them.
My Concern like many others is the current effect of gas prices and how they will impact on green gas.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I came to this site in the hope and expectation of seeing actual cost figures for i) £s/kWhr import ii) £s/day for standing charge iii) £s/kWhr for export.
Please, I beg you, where can I find these figures?
Yours sincerely,
E.H.Baldock
Having been with octopus energy for a year, I have had no problems
transferring over to them, or dealing with them regarding our bill, always
tell us when our d/d is being taken out, always e-mail when our meter reading is needed.
So far very pleased with their service.
I have received nothing but bad service and have been left with a large bill and smart meters that don’t work. When I have asked for help from octopus energy I was offered help and then left with nothing. I have been over charged and they seem to think if they don’t fix the meters I will not be able to prove they are over charging me. They are about as much help as a chocolate tea pot.
Octopus Energy’s very poor estimates of household energy consumption have left us in debit by almost half the original tariff, after a period of 2.5 years. It’s not acceptable to quote other companies out of customers and then not deliver on these estimates. Very bad experience.
What is tier unit price rate .electric only?
Hello,
Its a very good time to sign up to Octopus Energy during the lockdown as it will save you some money
I recently signed up to Octopus Energy. My son gave me a referral code and we both have received £50.00 credit. So it works!
I signed up because of his experience with Octopus, which has been very positive:

Renewable energy
£50.00 referral code system
No exit fees
Smooth transition from my previous supplier
The online web site is very user friendly and if you need to phone I have found an agent was available quite quickly
