Is Omni Energy going bust?

Yes, on 2nd November Ofgem announced that Omni Energy, who supply around 6,000 pre-payment customers, had gone bust.

Who are Omni Energy?

Omni Energy are based in Leeds and were granted an energy supply licence at the end of 2018.

They specialise in the pre-payment market and claim to be able to keep their prices low because they keep their costs low, although not at the expense of customer service.

What tariffs do Omni Energy offer?

Omni Energy offer just two tariffs, both of which are variable rate tariffs with no exit fees. One is an Economy 7 tariff that has different electricity rates depending on whether you use your electricity during the night or during the day and the other is a standard variable rate tariff.

They do not offer a tariff aimed at electric vehicle users and there is no ‘feed-in’ tariff available.

How do Omni Energy compare price?

Omni Energy’s customer reviews on TrustPilot praise the low cost of their energy. They are one of the cheaper energy suppliers and their prices are well below the energy cap.

What do other Omni Energy reviews say?

On TrustPilot, Omni Energy gets an impressive 4.2 out of five stars. Three quarters of their reviewers rate them as excellent. Their customer service in particular is singled out as been excellent.

Because they are a relatively new energy supplier, Which? and Citizen’s Advice do not have sufficient data to give them a rating.

How green is Omni Energy’s energy?

Omni Energy’s electricity comes from renewable sources. They publish their fuel mix on their website. Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates are purchased to confirm this.

What is Omni Energy’s customer service like?

Omni Energy’s customer service is praised on TrustPilot where 74% of their reviewers rate them as excellent. However, there is no available data in terms of complaint numbers, call centre waiting times, etc.

There is a live chat feature on their website and they can also be contacted via their web portal. Customers can also phone them. Although their official opening hours are shorter than many other energy suppliers – 9am to 5pm only and closed on weekends – they claim that they monitor live chat requests out of hours.

What is Omni Energy’s website/app like?

The Omni Energy website is well laid out and easy to use. There is an online portal, but as Omni Energy only offer pre-payment accounts it only offers fairly basic functionality.

There is an Android app claiming it is for Omni Energy but it is not available via the Google Play Store which suggests that downloading it would not be wise.

What billing options are available?

Omni Energy only offer pre-payment accounts. They do not offer credit accounts.

Do Omni Energy offer smart meters?

Omni Energy are currently rolling out smart meters to customers who want a smart meter.

Customers who already have a smart meter and want to switch their energy supply to Omni Energy will not be able to do that if they have a first generation smart meter. If they have a second generation smart meter it may be possible.

Smart meters across the country are being upgraded so even if a customer cannot switch to Omni Energy now, they may be able to at some point in the future.

Do Omni Energy offer a recommend a friend referral scheme?

Do they mention about the Priority Services Register?

Omni Energy operate a Priority Services Register. Customers can register via the Omni Energy website if they or someone in their household is a pensioner, is disabled, has a long-term illness or there are children under five years old living at the address being supplied with energy.

Do they offer a ‘Dual Fuel’ discount?

Omni Energy do not offer a ‘Dual Fuel’ discount.

Will they offer to pay a customer’s exit fees when they join them?

Omni Energy will not pay a customer’s exit fees. Any exit fees charged by a customer’s previous energy supplier remain the responsibility of the customer. However, neither do Omni Energy charge exit fees when customers switch their energy supply to a different supplier.

What happens if you move home whilst with them?

If you move into a home that is already supplied by Omni Energy, you can transfer the energy supply into your name in under two minutes via the Omni Energy website. If you are an existing Omni Energy customer and move home, you need to tell Omni Energy that you have moved out via their website.
