Who are Powershop?
Powershop were launched in 2009 in New Zealand. In 2014 they expanded into Australia, finally coming to the UK in 2017.
The company are based in Birmingham and are backed by nPower which have over two million customers and control nearly 10% of the UK energy supply market.
Powershop take a different approach to how they charge for energy. Customers pay monthly based on the amount they have actually used, but can reduce their overall energy cost by buying Powerpacks. These Powerpacks are bundles of discounted energy that customers can buy in advance. Powerpacks are made available on a regular basis.
Powershop have just the one main tariff. This is a fixed-rate tariff called Powershop Pro. The rates are fixed for a year and there are no exit fees.
It is important to note that Powershop Pro is not the same as the fixed-rate tariffs offered by other energy suppliers. There is a standing charge and a standard rate per unit of energy used, but customers can also buy Powerpacks on a regular basis.
Powerpacks are bundles of energy at discounted rates. They are offered on a regular basis and customers need to go online to check whether any Powerpacks are available. If they are, customers can choose whether or not to buy them.
Customers don’t have to buy any Powerpacks if they don’t want to do that, but Powershop’s energy charges are only competitive if customers make regular Powerpack purchases.
Powershop also offer Powershop Lite. This is similar to Powershop Pro but Powershop Lite customers do not use Powerpacks and just pay for their energy based on a fixed-rate tariff.
Powershop do not support the ‘feed-in’ tariff requirements and export meters for customers who are on a feed in tariff service. As such, although Powershop can supply customers on a ‘feed-in’ tariff with energy, those customers would need to arrange their ‘feed-in’ tariff via a Feed-in Tariff Licensee.
There is no variable rate tariff and no specific tariff for electric vehicle owners.
Powershop are competitive on price, but only for customers who are prepared to monitor the Powerpacks on offer and buy them when they are available. Customers who simply pay the standard energy prices without taking advantages of the discounted Powerpack bundles will find that they can get their energy cheaper elsewhere.
Powershop offer a First Year Promise to new customers. Some customers take a while to get used to how Powerpacks work and don’t take advantage of them as much as they could, so in the first year Powershop automatically issues Powerpacks to customers who are spending more than was originally estimated.
In the most recent Which? Energy suppliers survey, Powershop got four out of five stars for value for money.
Powershop only score 2.5 out of five stars on Trustpilot. The negative reviews generally focus on a variety of issues, such as final bills, overcharging and struggles contacting customer service.
Their Facebook page also has a low score of 2.1 out of 5, with reviews following a similar theme to TrustPilot.
In contrast however, in the latest Which? Energy supplier survey, Powershop ranked in joint 5th position out of 35 energy suppliers, with an overall score of 77%.
Powershop’s energy comes from nPower and it is not particularly environmentally friendly.
According to the Powershop website, just 26% of Powershop’s electricity comes from renewable sources compared with the UK’s national average of 32.8%.
Fossil fuels are used for 56.1% of the electricity supply with nuclear energy representing a further 14.7%.
However, Powershop buys renewable energy certificates to offset their carbon emissions.
Powershop’s preferred method of contact is by phone. Their call centre does not close until 8pm on weekdays so they are contactable by phone for longer than most other energy suppliers.
You can also contact Powershop via email although there is no live chat feature on their website.
Powershop’s digital tools score a respectable four out of five stars in the latest Which? energy supplier survey.
The Powershop website is well laid out and the information is easy to find.
There is also a Powershop app which is compatible with both Android and Apple’s iOS devices. This app scores 4.4 out of five stars at Google’s Play Store and 3.7 out of five stars at Apple’s App Store.
The website and app let customers do the same sort of things that can be done with other energy suppliers’ digital tools. Customers can manage their account, monitor their energy usage and submit meter readings.
However, the one important difference is that the Powershop website and app let Powershop customers buy Powerpacks to save them money. Powershop app users also get notifications when new Powerpacks become available.
Powershop bills monthly based on your energy usage. These monthly bills need to be paid by direct debit. If your direct debit mandate is cancelled or your direct debit fails, Powershop reserves the right to transfer you nPower’s standard tariff. If this happens, you will also be required to settle any outstanding balance immediately.
Powershop scores well in the latest Which? energy supplier survey, with five out of five stars for bill accuracy and four out of five stars for bill clarity.
As well as the monthly bills, Powershop customers can also buy energy via Powerpacks. These Powerpacks can be paid for by credit or debit card. Payment by cheque or cash is not possible.
Powershop does not offer a pre-payment option other than letting its monthly payment customers purchase energy in advance via Powerpacks.
Powershop are offering smart meters in most regions. There is a facility to check whether a customer’s region is one of those regions on the Powershop website.
Customers have a smart meter with their existing energy supplier may find that they lose the smart functionality when they switch to Powershop and if that is the case, they would need to submit meter readings manually.
Do Powershop offer a recommend a friend referral scheme?
Powershop were offering a friend referral scheme that gave £25 to the new customer as well as £25 to the existing customer, subject to a maximum of £150 per referring customer.
However, the scheme has now been withdrawn and there are no rewards for customers referring their family and friends to Powershop.
Do they work with pre-payment meters?
Powershop do not accept customers on pre-payment meters although the way that they charge for their energy is similar in the sense that their customers buy much of the energy that they use in advance via Powerpacks.
If a Powershop customer gets into financial difficulty, Powershop may suspend that customer’s credit account and move that customers onto an nPower pre-payment account.

Will they offer to pay a customer’s exit fees when they join them?
Powershop will not pay any exit fees imposed by a customers previous energy supplier. Any such fees would remain the responsibility of the customer.

Do they offer any incentives for joining?
