Based in Birmingham Tonik Energy have made great a name for themselves despite being a relatively new energy provider. They are focused on being green and more eco-friendly and promise to help their customers half their energy bills by 2022.

They also aim to help their customers produce their own energy and have a number of ways you can do this including purchasing your own solar panels. But of course, that isn’t a step the majority of people are willing to make right now which is why they also offer a wide range of different energy plans.

Let’s begin my Tonik Energy review by taking a closer look at these tariffs so you can see whether they are the right provider for you.

What tariffs do Tonik Energy offer?

You’ll find a wide range of different tariffs available from Tonik Energy and like most energy providers you will need to enter your postcode onto their website to see which tariffs are available in your area.

They offer both variable and fixed tariffs and special tariffs for Economy 7 meters. One of their tariffs as even been designed with electric cars in mind so you can extend the savings beyond your home! Some of the tariffs are more specialised and niche but with so many options to choose from most people will be able to find a tariff or two that is suitable for them.

How do Tonik Energy compare on price?

Tonik Energy says they want to help their customers save money and one of the ways they do this is by offering lower prices. They say their prices are fair and transparent and they also offer 3% interest on any outstanding credit.

Many of their reviews on TrustPilot also said their prices were competitive however Tonik have raised the prices of their standard variable tariff recently. Money Saving Expert has done their own article on the price rise which is worth checking out.

This only affects one tariff but it is the tariff most customers will go on to after their fixed term period ends. So, while Tonik Energy is not the cheapest provider available they are still offering reasonably low prices especially on their cheaper tariffs and they provide a high-quality service. I’ll continue my Tonik Energy review by looking at their customer service in more detail below.

What is Tonik Energy customer service like?

Tonik Energy has scored quite well when it comes to customer service to continue with Money Saving Expert they scored a respectful 76% in their May 2018 survey which gave them a score of great.

Many of Tonik Energy’s TrustPilot reviews also highlighted their positive experiences with the customer service team although there are some negative reviews sprinkled about the place. Some of which do complain about a slow service and glitches with their smart meters.

However, overall Tonik Energy’s customer service team seem to be quite professional and have received a lot of praise. They don’t have a spotless record (which energy provider does) but they have scored very well.

What do other Tonik Energy reviews say?

So, let’s look at Tonik Energy’s reviews, shall we? They have scored quite well on a number of review sites although there are a few negatives to mention as well. In the Citizens Advice’s latest poll Tonik Energy came in 8th place out of the 33 suppliers surveyed.

They scored 5 stars for ease of switching and customer contact but only scored 2.5 stars for clearance time on bills. Overall they scored a very good 3.95 out of 5 so it’s a respectful score but there is some room for improvement.

I’ve already briefly mentioned Tonik Energy’s TrustPilot reviews but let’s take a more detailed look at them. At the time of writing, Tonik Energy has 1839 reviews and a TrustScore of 8.5. They have 4 stars in total which gives them a great rating and I have compiled the review ratings below for you to check.

  • 13% of reviewers have rated Tonik Energy as good.
  • 3% of reviewers have rated Tonik energy as average.
  • 3% of reviewers have rated Tonik energy as poor.
  • 6% of reviewers have rated Tonik energy as bad.

Again this really leaves me to reiterate what I have already said about Tonik Energy they are certainly very impressive but things can still be improved. Which don’t yet have a review of Tonik Energy so to surmise what we have learned so far they are not the cheapest provider available but still provide a great service which the majority of their customers seem satisfied with. There’s room for improvement but they are still doing very well.

What is Tonik Energy website/app like?

Tonik Energy’s website is modern with a minimalist look and style to it. It doesn’t really stand out in any great way but there is nothing really wrong with it either and navigating it is very easy. The top menu shows you all the main categories at a glance and the help and support FAQ features a lot of in-depth information.

It’s clean and concise and everything seems to be in working order, the online customer portal allows you to update your information, check bills, make meter readings and much more as well. However, one noticeable negative was the fact that there is no search option. Tonik Energy doesn’t yet offer an app for either IOS or Android devices.

How green is Tonik Energy?

Tonik Energy is based around being green and eco-friendly so they offer 100% renewably sourced electricity. You can also get gas that is 10% green and sourced from renewable sources. Check this link to find out more information about the energy available from Tonik.

Tonik Energy complaints

In regards to customer complaints, Tonik Energy as scored quite well, on the Citizens Advice they received 4 stars for responding to complaints and they received 137.9 complaints on average for every 100,000 customers.

It’s a very respectful score but if you do have a complaint have Tonik Energy made the process simple? Well, there is a complaints policy but it does take a bit of searching to find on their website however it’s clear from it that Tonik Energy does take complaints seriously. To log in to the Tonik Energy customer portal simply follow this link or you can access it from the top of their website. From the customer portal, you can make meter reading, view your usage and payment history and much more.

Below are a few quick questions you may need answers to along with our Tonik Energy review:

Do they work with pre-payment meters?

Tonik Energy can work with pre-payment meters but you will need to get in touch with them first to ensure you will be compatible.

Do they accept Economy 7?

Yes, Tonik Energy does accept economy 7 although on their selected economy 7 tariffs.

Are they signed up to the Warm Home Discount?

Are they signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee?

No Tonik Energy is not currently signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee and they state that switching to them will take between 3 – 4 weeks on average. So, make sure you are prepared and able to wait that long if you wish to switch to them.

What billing options are available?

Direct debit is the preferred payment method although other options like pre-payment meters are available but you will need to contact Tonik Energy first though.

Do they offer a smart meter? Do they accept smart meters?

Tonik Energy can work with a range of smart meters so if you already have one already they should be able to take you on without issue. If they can’t support your current smart meter then you can still join them however certain features won’t be accessible and your meter will work just like a traditional one.

Tonik Energy are currently on a nationwide rollout for their smart meters but it is not expected to be complete till 2020. So, while they can supply you with one you might be waiting a while.

Do they charge exit fees?

No Tonik Energy do not charge exit fees for any of their tariffs and they explain it’s because they want their customers to have more freedom.

Will they offer to pay a customer’s exit fees when they join them?

No Tonik Energy don’t currently offer to pay a customer’s exit fees if they join them. However, you do have the peace of mind in knowing that they themselves don’t charge any no matter what tariff you are on.

Do they offer any incentives to customers to refer friends/family?

Yes, Tonik Energy does have a rewards system in place for referrals although it’s a little different from the usual rewards scheme energy providers offer. There is no link sharing customers will simply be asked when registering if they’ve been referred by a friend.

What happens if you move home whilst with them?

Moving home is relatively simple with Tonik Energy just ensure you give them enough notice. You will also need to give them your final meter reading before you leave and they will require at least two working days’ notice. For more information check out their terms and conditions page.

Our objective is simple, to provide you with the information to help give you confidence when switching to a new energy supplier.

  1. Avoid. My elderly friend is with Tonik and is being chased for £1000 of imaginary arrears due to Tonik using a base reading that they appear to have invented which is thousands of kilowatt hours too low. Customer services are nice when you speak to them but they always say that they will have to refer the issue but no-one ever gets back. I have tried to contact customer services online to provide a written complaint and evidence but after two weeks no reply, only reference numbers. It is not clear that anyone is reading the messages. Certainly this is completely unacceptable and incompetent. Avoid.

  2. Im finding exactly the same, They now owe me over £500 but getting my meter issue solved, personal projection recalculated and refund of overpayment is still being problematic

  3. Avoid if you want peace of mind! Not been generating regular bills since Jan 2020 and yet continue charging me based on estimated bills despite providing regualr readings! Now, they have ended up with a huge credit in my account and i had to keep on pushing them since March 2020 to just get visbility of the credit because they kept reporting an incorrect (much lower) figure. They confirmed logging my complaint in MArch and only after several emails, Twitter DMs, online reviews, unanswered calls and msgs asking for the complaint reference, they provided it to me in June! Worst customer service ever! By the way, i have this as an ongoing issue since early in the year so i do not buy their excude that Covid-19 has caused delays. In reality, they are just don’t about the customer and i suspect that had i not pushed for my credit, they would have happily kept it! I have switched to another provider now but fair warning, only go with Tonik if you want to be ignored as a customer and want a poor experience!
