Toto Energy Review
Toto Energy is one of the newer energy companies in the UK, they are based in Brighton and present themselves as a locally based cheaper energy supplier. They highlight the fact they are cheaper than the big 6 suppliers on their website and that they work with local cooperatives.
However, if you have been keeping up on the latest news in the UK energy market then you might have seen Toto Energy’s name mentioned and it’s not been positive news that’s been reported. As this energy supplier has been going through some difficult times lately, but are things looking better now?
My Toto Energy review will look at everything you need to know if you’re considering moving energy supplier. I’ll compare reviews and news from professional sources so you can get a clear look at how Toto Energy is currently operating.
What tariffs do Toto Energy offer?
One of the most important parts of any energy company is its tariffs so what does Toto Energy offer? Toto Energy offers dual plans and electricity only tariffs. To find out what tariffs are available you need to enter your postcode however unfortunately for me this took quite a few attempts to work (more on this is mentioned further down) but you may have better luck.
There is a range of different tariffs available including a 12-month fixed tariff, fixed saver tariffs and a more simple tariff simply called the Toto Plain and Simple. Each tariff is quite different so check the terms and conditions carefully.
Some tariffs require certain kinds of payment while some have exit fees and overs don’t, there is a lot of variety but it can be a bit confusing. Overall though I’ am happy with the range of tariffs on offer and there seems to be something for everyone.
How do Toto Energy compare on price?
Toto Energy promises small prices and because they buy their energy at wholesale you would think they would be able to keep to that promise. However, what Toto’s website states and what its customers say are two very different things.
With many customer reviews complaining of overcharging and overly expensive bills. Toto Energy did seem to offer great prices in 2016 when it was founded and started operation however it late 2017 it did announce a price rise for many of its customers.
This was halted but only for certain tariffs so Toto Energy might not be the bargain it appears to be. Some of its saver tariffs do seem to still offer great deals though but the reviews and negative reception will make people understandably wary.
What is Toto Energy’s customer service like?
Toto Energy’s customer service as not be ranked highly by many people. They have the unfortunate distinction of coming in at last place in the Citizen Advice’s poll scoring only 1.45 out of 5. And many of their reviews share similar sentiments about their customer service.
Money Saving Expert also posted their own article about the problems with Toto Energy’s customer service as well. Earlier this year Twitter was rife with complaints from customers and although things have improved since then a look at Toto Energy’s reviews on TrustPilot shows there is still a lot of problems.
What do other Toto Energy reviews say?
Because Toto Energy is still a relatively new energy provider there aren’t many reviews from professional sources like Which. However, as I’ve previously mentioned the Citizens Advice did review Toto Energy and their results were not very impressive.
Their customers on TrustPilot have also been very unhappy. At the time of writing my Toto Energy review there are 9341 reviews which is a lot when you consider Toto Energy has only been in operation since 2016.
49% of the reviews have rated Toto Energy as excellent, 15% have rated them great and a further 5% of reviews are rated average. 4% of reviews have rated Toto Energy as poor with the final 26% of reviews rating them as bad. This gives Toto Energy a total score of 6.4 and three stars out of 5.
This still gives Toto Energy an average rating but it’s a very poor score overall. Many reviews complain of over-charging, inaccurate bills, poor customer service and difficulty inputting meter readings.
Some of the reviews are positive but the majority have not been favourable to Toto Energy. In the early days of their operation reviews were somewhat more positive but Toto Energy does seem to have run into some difficulties lately.
What is Toto Energy’s website/app like?
While it’s certainly not all been good news for Toto Energy I am a big fan of their website. It’s colourful without coming off as unprofessional and simple and easy to navigate. The help and support section, in particular, is very impressive with categories that are easy to identify.
Searching the website is also easy and it feels fast and fluid to move around. Accessing the customer portal is also simple once you’ve registered. As mentioned previously searching for an address to find out tariff information was unresponsive (after repeated attempts with a different address) which may be a glitch.
If this does happen to you then you can search for tariff information by using your meter number as well and by inputting your full address. The latter of which did work for me so while there is potential for some errors and glitches I still think Toto Energy’s website is very good although it could do with a little quality checking in places.
There isn’t currently an app available for Toto Energy which isn’t that surprising when you consider that they are quite new to the market.
How green is Toto energy?
Well, this is one I can’t really answer because Toto Energy has not released their fuel mix data as of yet. So, for now, I can’t really say how green Toto Energy is.
Toto Energy complaints
Despite all the bad news one thing I still want to commend Toto Energy for is that they have made making a complaint simple and straightforward. There is an in-depth complaint section on their website which is certainly worth checking out although I have listed the key contact information below.

Toto Energy also states that they will try to get most complaints dealt with in 5 days when possible.

You can log in to the Toto Energy customer portal easily at the top the website or just follow this link. From the customer portal, you can check your current and past energy usage, view your payment history/ bills, change your tariffs and much more.
Do they work with pre-payment meters?
Yes, Toto Energy does accept pre-payment meters however there is a greater risk if you use a prepayment meter with Toto Energy. They recently made the news in the energy industry after moving many of their pre-payment customers to another firm due to problems with its current operations. Despite this, they still offer to serve customers on pre-payment meters.
Do they accept Economy 7?
Toto Energy doesn’t mention the Economy 7 meter at all on their website which leaves me to conclude they don’t support them.
Are they signed up to the Warm Home Discount?

Are they signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee?
No Toto Energy are not signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee although they say they have made the switching process quick and easy for customers. Be sure to read their FAQ to find out more information about their switching process.
What billing options are available?
You have three billing options when it comes to Toto Energy. There is pre-payment meters, direct debit monthly payments, and a smart-flexi saver model. Check out Toto Energy’s homepage to see more details on your billing options.
Do they offer a smart meter? Do they accept smart meters?
Yes, Toto Energy does offer smart meters for customers and they may be able to work with you if you already have one. However, certain smart meters are not compatible with Toto Energy so if you already have a smart meter make sure you check with them to ensure it’s compatible.
Do they charge exit fees?
Yes, Toto Energy does charge exit fees but only on certain tariffs, the amount you’ll be charged will also vary from tariff to tariff. Some are quite small at only £10 or £20 while others are much higher so check you tariffs carefully.
Will they offer to pay a customer’s exit fees when they join them?
No Toto Energy will not pay a new customer’s exit fees if they switch to them.
Do they offer any incentives to customers to refer friends/family?
No Toto Energy does not currently offer any referral or rewards program.
What happens if you move home whilst with them?
