Octopus vs Sainsbury’s Energy (2025 Comparison)

In this guide, we’ll look at Octopus vs Sainsbury’s Energy in depth. Both of these suppliers are known as being green suppliers, but is one greener and which one is the better option for you?

Read on to find out how they compare when it comes to price, bill accuracy, customer service and more.

Who are Octopus?

Octopus have over 6.5 million customers and have grown to be one of the leading energy names in the U.K. Octopus is known for their innovative tariff options and commitment to a greener future.

Friends of The Earth approve of Octopus, and they have also been a Which? recommended supplier for the last few years.

Who are Sainsbury’s Energy?

Sainsbury’s Energy do not offer their own gas and electricity services, instead they partner with an existing supplier. They are currently in partnership with E.On Next.

This partnership lets customers receive Sainsbury’s related perks, like earning Nectar points on their energy bills, whilst having the comfort that their energy is being supplied by one of the big energy providers.

Octopus vs Sainsbury’s Energy: What’s the difference in price?

We asked for quotes based on the below factors to find out which energy supplier offers the best prices for their tariffs:

  • Dual fuel supply
  • Standard meter
  • Moderate usage (a 3-bedroom home with a family of four)
  • 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas consumption
  • Postcode located in the South East of England

Octopus provides customers with three different tariffs:

Tariff NameTariff DescriptionMonthly Cost
Tracker TariffSmart tariff where prices change daily. No contract. No exit fees.*£92.99
Flexible OctopusFlexible tariff where prices go up and down with the market. No contract.£141.67
Octopus 12M Fixed12-month, fixed rate contract. No exit fees.£142.50
*Using an average rate over previous months for both fuels. Only available to existing customers. Source.

In comparison, Sainsbry’s Energy offers three different tariffs:

Tariff NameTariff DescriptionMonthly Cost
Standard VariableNo exit fees, no contract. Prices may change over time.£142.92
Sainsbury’s Fix and Reward Fixed 24m v9Prices are fixed for two years. £150 exit fee per fuel.£142.92
Sainsbury’s Fix and Reward Fixed 12m v10Prices are fixed for one year. £75 exit fee per fuel.£143.36
Source.

Conclusion: Is Octopus cheaper than Sainsbury’s Energy? Yes, both their fixed and variable tariffs are cheaper than Sainsbury’s, although only just.

Octopus also have no exit fees on their fixed tariff, whereas you could pay up to £150 per fuel with Sainsbury’s.

Octopus vs Sainsbury’s Energy: What’s the difference in tariff options?

Now, let’s look at each of these suppliers’ tariffs in a bit more detail.

Octopus

As we’ve seen, Octopus have three different options available; the details of each can be seen below:

Flexible Octopus

– This is a variable rate tariff
– Offers 100% renewable electricity
– No exit fees

Octopus 12M Fixed

– This is a 12-month contract with unit prices and standing charges fixed for that time
– No exit fees
– 100% renewable electricity

Tracker Tariff

– Unit rates change daily
– No exit fees
– Only available with a smart meter
– Not available on signing up – see below for more details
– Unit rate is capped at 100p/kWh for electricity and 30p/kWh for gas (including VAT)

Sainsbury’ Energy

Here are the three Sainsbury’s tariffs in more detail:

Standard Variable

– This is a variable rate tariff
– No exit fees
– 3x Nectar points on your Sainsbury’s shops

Sainsbury’s Fix and Reward Fixed 24m v9

– This is a 24-month contract with unit prices and standing charges fixed for that time
– £150 per fuel exit fees
– 100% renewable electricity
– Smart meter required
– Upto 8,000 bonus nectar points (worth approx. £40)
– 3x points on your Sainsbury’s shops

Sainsbury’s Fix and Reward Fixed 12m v10

– This is a 12-month contract with unit prices and standing charges fixed for that time
– £75 per fuel exit fees
– 100% renewable electricity
– Smart meter required
– Upto 4,000 bonus nectar points (worth approx. £20)
– 3x points on your Sainsbury’s shops

There are quite a few differences between the tariff options between the two suppliers.

When it comes to the variable tariff, Octopus offers 100% renewable electricity, whereas Sainsbury’s does not. Sainsbury’s does, however, offer 3x nectar points on your Sainsbury’s shops.

With the fixed tariffs, Octopus offer no exit fees whereas on the same length fixed tariff with Sainsbury’s, you would pay £75 per fuel. Octopus do not require a smart meter either. With Sainsbury’s however, you could get up to £40 worth of nectar points along with 3x points on all your Sainsbury’s shops.

Conclusion: If you are a regular Sainsbury’s shopper, the Nectar points may make their tariffs worth it for you. However, for most people, it seems the options from Octopus, with 100% renewable electricity and no exit fees, are likely to be the better choice.

Who offers the greenest energy?

Many choose their energy provider based on how much they care about the planet, but what sets Good Energy and Octopus apart? Now, we’ll compare them when it comes to green energy.

Octopus manages renewable energy assets valued at £3.4 billion, sufficient to supply power to around 2 million households in the UK. The company encourages customers to install solar power systems at home as part of its sustainability efforts.

From 2018 to 2021, Octopus effectively neutralised 708,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Their commitment to eco-friendly innovation includes a £10 million investment in the UK’s only research and development centre focused on low-carbon heating solutions. All of Octopus’s electricity tariffs are 100% renewable, highlighting their position as one of Europe’s leading renewable energy investors.

As we mentioned earlier, Sainsbury’s does not actually supply your energy; this is all done through E.ON Next.

E.ON Next do generate some of their own electricity with Biomass plants in Lockerbie and Sheffield that produce enough energy to power 100,000 homes. They also work directly with wind and solar farms.

Sainsbury’s do offer 100% renewable electricity on their fixed tariffs, but not on their variable tariff.

Conclusion: Sainsbury’s (through E.ON Next) do offer green energy, but not on the same scale as Octopus. Octopus produce much more themselves and offer renewable electricity across all their tariffs.

Who has better customer reviews?

We used Trustpilot to see how current customers rate both energy providers and whether Octopus or Sainsbury’s Energy is rated higher.

Here are the latest review ratings:

  • Octopus score 4.8 out of 5 based on over 245,000 reviews (source)
  • Sainsbury’s Energy is rated 4.5 out of 5 based on over 2,800 reviews (source)

89% of Octopus’ reviews were five stars, and 79% of Sainsbury’s ratings were five stars.

Conclusion: Both of these suppliers score well with customer reviews, but Octopus has the higher overall score, and so wins this round.

Who has the better app?

Many energy customers choose to manage their accounts via their phones, so when it comes to account management, a supplier’s app is very important.

It appears since moving to E.ON Next as their partner, Sainsbury’s have stopped using their energy app. All account management, including meter readings, bill payments and changing details, is done through their website.

Octopus Energy’s app scores a very high 4.8/5 on the App Store and similarly highly on the Google Play store. Customers say they use the app to check usage, submit meter readings and pay their bills easily. The app also offers detailed charts and data on your energy usage, even in near real-time.

Conclusion: With Octopus being the only one that actually has an app, they win this round!

Who has the better customer service?

Citizens Advice conducts quarterly surveys to provide updated information on suppliers’ customer service.

We’ve picked out the key Citizens Advice data to understand which of the two energy suppliers is best for customer service. Sainsbury’s aren’t included in the survey, so we have used E.ON Next instead.

Hi, I'm Rob and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project 5 years ago when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I spent have a lot of time (too much some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy related topics which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
