EDF’s extensive operational reach spans multiple countries, making a significant impact throughout Europe, the United States, and various other regions worldwide.

Notably, EDF is widely acknowledged for its unwavering commitment to nuclear power, overseeing the operation of multiple nuclear power plants on a global scale.

What’s the difference in tariff options? 

In our first comparison, we’ll look at the different tariff options offered by both energy suppliers.

OVO

OVO offer a standard variable tariff, a fixed tariff for either 1 or 2 years and something which we haven’t seen often, a green ‘upgrade’ which can be added to their 1-year fix.

Below, we’ve listed the full details of their various tariff options: 

1 or 2-Year Fixed

  • Fixed unit rate plan for 12 or 24 months.
  • £75 exit fee per fuel if you choose to leave early.

1 Year Fixed + Greener Energy

  • Fixed unit rates for 12 months
  • 100% renewable electricity
  • 10% green gas and 90% carbon offset gas
  • £20 contribution to support new renewable generators
  • £75 exit fee per fuel

Simpler Energy

  • Standard variable tariff.
  • Flexible plan where prices can go up and down over time
  • No exit fees

EDF

EDF offers a similar standard rate tariff. Their fixed tariffs are slightly different, with the option of either 1 year or 3 years. You can see the full details below:

Standard Variable

– Rates can go up or down over time in line with Ofgem Price Cap
– No exit fees or end date
– Smart meter not required
– Does not claim 100% renewable electricity

EDF Essentials

– A fixed tariff with either a 1-year or 3-year term
– Exit fees of £150 per fuel for both tariffs
– Discount for paying by direct debit
– Smart meter required (available for free if you do not already have one)
– 100% renewable electricity
Summary: We feel that OVO deserves to win this round. Their fixed tariffs have lower exit fees and you also have the option of upgrading the one-year tariff to become ‘greener’. Their fixed tariffs also don’t require a smart meter like they do with EDF.

What’s the difference in price?

Next, we’ll look at the prices available for these tariffs. It’s worth noting that if you change any of our below criteria, you will likely get a different price, so please use these prices as a guide.

We used the following criteria when getting quotes for both OVO and EDF:

  • Dual fuel supply
  • Standard Meter
  • 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas (Medium usage – 3-bedroom house occupied by a family of 4)
  • Postcode in the East Midlands

EDF gave us these prices for the tariffs they had available:

These prices include a Direct Debit discount. The Standard Variable tariff is £168, both EDF Essentials tariffs are £172 without Direct Debit.

Summary: There is not much in it when it comes to price. EDF offers a cheaper price for both of their fixes, which would save you about £48 per year. However, if you decide to leave early, their exit fees are considerably higher. We’ll call this one a draw.

Who offers the greenest energy?

For many customers, how green their energy supplier is really matters. With more emphasis than ever placed on protecting the environment, we wanted to compare the efforts of EDF and OVO. 

EDF is really stepping up their game in the quest to become a more efficient and eco-friendly energy provider. They’re all about promoting and embracing low-carbon technologies that are great for our environment. EDF even goes the extra mile by offering electric vehicle leasing and providing solar panels to their valued customers. 

OVO is also all about taking care of our planet. Although they don’t have a specific green tariff right now, they do offer something called “Green Extra.” This lets you enjoy carbon-neutral energy, although it does come with a small extra monthly cost. They’re actively involved in lots of projects to offset carbon emissions across the UK and are committed to making a difference for a greener future. 

Summary: Both EDF and OVO are doing significant things to become greener than ever. We think it’s only fair that this round is a draw.

Who has better customer reviews?

Looking at current customer reviews is a great way to help get an understanding of how customers currently see that company. The best place for finding out this information is Trustpilot, as there is a huge volume of reviews to look at and there is some level of verification to check they are real.

Here is a comparison of OVO and EDF when it comes to customer reviews:

As you can see, EDF and OVO are rated exactly the same overall. With that said 69% of OVO’s ratings were 5 stars, whereas 73% of EDF’s ratings were 5 stars. Not much of a difference, but maybe EDF is slightly better at impressing customers.

In terms of response, both suppliers responded to 99% of their negative reviews.

Glancing over the reviews themselves, customers appreciate OVO’s turnaround time to fix issues such as boiler problems and EDF is commended for its engineers.

Summary: OVO and EDF are evenly matched when it comes to customer reviews. There is nothing to tell these two apart, so this round is also a draw.

Who has the better website and app?

We heavily rely on apps these days with millions of people using their phones to submit meter readings and check bill statements and energy usage. That’s why we think it is important to compare each supplier’s website and apps to see if one is better than the other.

Let’s begin with OVO who have an outstanding 4.8 out of 5 for their app as rated by customers. OVO’s app is praised for its practicality and smoothness. Customers know that they can log on and do what they need to do without wasting time.

OVO appear to have a solid Developer team for their app who seem to actively listen to feedback and fix bugs rapidly. This could be what makes their app so well-rated. We also can’t fault their website which is designed to be simple to navigate. Everything from page loading times to the process of logging in is made easy. 

The EDF app has a rating of 4.5/5 and is also highly recommended by its customers who seem to have few issues using it to manage their energy accounts with ease. Some customers have said that it can be tricky to find a customer service agent online via the app but the website also offers this functionality. Overall though, it seems to be getting plenty of positive feedback.

EDF also have a very well-designed website that ticks all of the boxes. From its minimalistic visual design to ease of use, EDF’s website is a modern, well-designed site.

Summary: Both suppliers have good websites and well-rated apps. OVO wins this round however for managing to maintain a better app review score.

Who has the better customer service?

Next, we’ll look closely at how the two energy names compare for customer service. This is an important area to consider as if you have any issues, you will be relying on customer service to help resolve them. Citizens Advice website is an excellent resource for looking at this, with quarterly updates that compare almost all active energy suppliers across a range of factors.

Summary: Both of these suppliers have reasonable call centre wait times, although EDF’s is over 40 seconds shorter. EDF responds to nearly all emails within 2 days, a much better rate than OVO. OVO does have slightly longer opening times, but EDF is the clear winner when it comes to customer service.

Who has fewer complaints?

Who is the better energy supplier?

This was a really close comparison as the two energy suppliers are almost as good as each other. However, we feel OVO just takes it as the better supplier. They offer better tariff options, have a better-rated app and perform better on complaints. EDF do perform better when it comes to customer service, however.
