So Energy Review (August 2026)

Overview
So Energy offers highly rated apps and strong Trustpilot reviews, but mixed independent service scores suggest it is best suited to digitally focused households.
Who are So Energy?
So Energy was set up in 2015 as a challenger energy supplier. In 2021, Ireland's Electricity Supply Board (ESB) bought a majority stake in the business, and the two companies merged their UK domestic customer bases. In July 2026, ESB announced it is exploring the sale of the supplier as part of a strategic review to focus on its core business. Today, So Energy is one of the UK's smaller domestic energy suppliers.[1][2]
As well as supplying gas and electricity, the company offers a range of home energy products, including solar panels, home batteries, electric vehicle chargers, and boiler cover. A key feature that sets it apart is that it lets customers vote on where it buys its renewable electricity, choosing between wind, solar, hydro, and biomass generators. In terms of awards, So Energy won a Special Commendation for Best Overall Improvement at the 2026 Uswitch Energy Awards. Its specialist tariffs also hold the 2026 Uswitch Flex Accreditation.[3][4]

Customer reviews
So Energy holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.5 out of 5 from over 30,000 reviews. Looking at the spread of sentiment, 73% of customers award five stars, while 12% leave a one-star rating.
Feedback suggests that users frequently highlight helpful staff and efficient service. Conversely, some negative reviews point to communication issues, including complaints being closed without resolution and unexpected billing charges.
The supplier responds to 100% of its negative Trustpilot reviews, typically within 24 hours. In the annual Which? survey, So Energy achieved an overall score of 60. It received 3 out of 5 for customer service and value for money, 5 out of 15 for complaints handling, and 2 out of 10 for smart meters.
Apps
So Energy provides mobile applications for both major operating systems. The iOS app has a score of 4.7 from 195 ratings, while the Android version holds a 4.62 rating on the Play Store from 127 ratings and over 10,000 installs. Both platforms are actively maintained, with the most recent updates released 44 days ago.
A recent sample of iOS reviews shows an average of 3.8 stars, which is lower than the lifetime rating, though this reflects a smaller sample size. Users frequently note that the interface is straightforward for checking energy usage, although a few report technical glitches when submitting meter readings.
Service and support
So Energy holds a Citizens Advice score of 2.86 out of 5, placing it 12th in the rankings. Customers calling the supplier wait an average of 1 minute and 6 seconds to speak to an agent, and the company responds to 91.3% of emails within two days. It records 57.1 complaints per 10,000 customers.
The supplier maintains formal vulnerability commitments registered with Citizens Advice. For standard support, its telephone lines operate on weekdays from 9am to 5pm, remaining closed on weekends. The company accepts account payments via Direct Debit.
So Energy complaints and performance
In Q2 2025, So Energy received 1,148 complaints for every 100,000 customers. The supplier resolved 31% of these complaints by the end of the next working day, and 79% within eight weeks.
Green energy
So Energy places a strong focus on sustainability. According to its website, the supplier guarantees 100% renewable electricity on all of its fixed-rate tariffs. It backs this up by buying renewable energy from UK generators, and it allows its customers to vote on which types of renewable generation it should invest in. The company also helps homes generate their own power by installing solar panels, home batteries, and heat pumps.
Because not all of its tariffs offer 100% renewable electricity as standard, its overall fuel mix differs. Based on Citizens Advice data from January to March 2026, So Energy supplies a mostly renewable mix, with some fossil fuels and a small amount of nuclear and other sources.
Verdict
So Energy offers highly rated apps and strong Trustpilot reviews, but mixed independent service scores suggest it is best suited to digitally focused households.
So Energy provides functional digital tools and receives positive feedback on Trustpilot, which may make it a suitable option for those who prefer managing their accounts online. Its lowest-priced tariff sits at £1,687 a year, providing a clear baseline for households considering a switch.
However, its lower Citizens Advice score and a Which? rating of 2 out of 10 for smart meters suggest that the traditional customer service experience can be mixed. It may suit customers who want straightforward online management, but those who prioritise stronger all-round independent service ratings or highly rated smart meter installations might want to compare alternative suppliers.

Hi, I'm Rob, and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project in 2018 when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data-backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I have spent a lot of time (too much, some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible, and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy-related topics, which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
