Overview
This page explains how Energy Review produces the content on this site — supplier reviews, "best of" comparison pages, guides, and calculators. We believe transparency about methodology is essential for readers to assess how much weight to place on our analysis.
What We Cover
Energy Review focuses on UK domestic energy. Our content falls into a few categories:
- Supplier reviews — Profiles of individual energy suppliers covering tariffs, customer satisfaction, app experience, and service.
- Comparison and "best of" pages — Curated shortlists ranking suppliers or tariffs against a particular criterion (e.g., cheapest, best customer service, greenest).
- Guides — Explanatory articles covering how the UK energy market works, how to switch, smart meters, tariff types, and related topics.
- Calculators — Interactive tools for estimating bills, comparing tariffs, or modelling switching savings.
Where a comparison cites figures as "above average" or "below average", the average refers to the suppliers included in that specific comparison rather than the entire market.
Data Sources
Where our content draws on data, that data is collected from publicly available sources and refreshed periodically. Typical sources include:
- Customer review platforms — Star ratings and review volume from public review sites.
- Industry and regulatory data — Complaints performance, customer satisfaction surveys, and other published industry data.
- App store ratings — Average ratings and review counts for supplier mobile apps, where an official app exists.
- Supplier websites — Tariff names, unit rates (p/kWh), and standing charges (p/day) from each supplier's publicly available pricing pages.
How Reviews Are Structured
We do not produce a single numeric score for each supplier. Instead, each review is structured into thematic sections that allow readers to assess performance on the dimensions that matter most to them — typically tariffs, customer reviews, app and online experience, and service and support.
Comparison and Ranking Pages
"Best of" and ranking pages compare a defined set of suppliers or tariffs against a stated criterion. The shortlist, ranking order, and the criteria used are explained on each page. Inclusion in a shortlist reflects how a supplier or tariff performs against that criterion at the time of writing, not an endorsement.
Tariff Information
Tariff data is sourced from supplier websites and represents publicly advertised rates at the time of collection. Where a supplier offers multiple tariffs, we typically focus on their standard variable tariff and any prominently advertised fixed-rate offers.
Rates are compared on a like-for-like basis where possible (e.g., electricity unit rate in p/kWh for a typical single-rate meter). Because tariffs vary by region, payment method, and meter type, all comparisons carry the caveat that your actual price may differ.
Calculators
Our calculators produce estimates based on the inputs you provide and a small number of internal assumptions (such as default consumption figures or representative tariff data). They are intended as a guide only and should not be relied on as a personalised quotation. The underlying assumptions are documented on each calculator page where relevant.
Guides
Guides are explanatory articles aimed at helping readers understand the UK energy market. They are based on publicly available information from regulators, industry bodies, and suppliers, and are updated periodically as the market evolves.
Editorial Process
Articles on this site are produced from structured supplier data, with checks for factual consistency, balance, and potential inaccuracies, followed by human review and sign-off before publication. See our Editorial Policy for more detail.
Limitations and Caveats
We believe in being transparent about the limitations of our data and analysis:
- Data lag — Despite regular updates, there will always be some lag between data collection and publication. Tariffs, customer satisfaction scores, and complaints data may have changed since collection.
- Tariff accuracy — Tariff information sourced from supplier websites may not reflect the latest offers, especially during periods of frequent repricing. Always verify current tariffs directly with the supplier.
- Review snapshots — Customer review scores represent a snapshot in time. A supplier's score may have improved or deteriorated since the data was collected.
- Regional variation — Energy tariffs and supplier service quality can vary by region. Our comparisons use nationally representative figures where possible but may not reflect your local experience.
- Calculator estimates — Calculator outputs are estimates based on stated assumptions and are not personalised quotations.
- Scope — Not every UK supplier or tariff is covered. The set of suppliers or tariffs included in any given comparison is stated on the page itself.
