Typical Household Energy Use

“The average household uses…” is one of the most quoted numbers in energy, and one of the least useful. A one-bed flat and a four-bed detached house are both households, and they are nothing like each other.

The figures on this page come from the Government’s National Energy Efficiency Data Framework, which is built from actual metered consumption rather than survey responses. You can break it down by property type, size, age, tenure, household characteristics and EPC band — which gets you far closer to a home like yours than any single national figure can.

What “typical” actually means

There are two different “typical” numbers in circulation and they do different jobs.

Ofgem’s typical consumption values are an assumption, chosen so that the price cap can be expressed as an annual figure. They exist to make a headline comparable from quarter to quarter, not to describe your home.

The DESNZ figures here are measurements: what groups of real homes actually got through. They are more honest about the spread, because you can pick a group that resembles your own house instead of averaging every home in the country into one number.

If you want to know whether your use is reasonable, the second kind is the one to use.

What actually drives how much you use

Run through a few of the comparisons above and the same pattern keeps appearing. Roughly in order of how much they matter:

  • Floor area.Bigger homes need more heat, and heating is the majority of most households’ energy. This dominates everything else.
  • Detachment. A mid-terrace house is warmed on two sides by its neighbours. A detached house of the same floor area loses heat through four walls and generally uses noticeably more.
  • Age and insulation. Older housing stock leaks more heat. This is the one you can actually change, and it is why the insulation schemes exist.
  • How the home is heated. A gas-heated home shows high gas and modest electricity. An all-electric home shows no gas at all and much higher electricity — the totals are not comparable without saying which is which.
  • Who is in during the day. Retired households and those working from home heat for more hours. This shows up clearly in the household-characteristic comparisons.

Notice what is missing from that list: which supplier you are with. Your supplier sets the price per unit, not how many units your house needs. That is why switching saves money on the rate but never on consumption — and why insulation beats switching for a leaky house.

These are group averages, not homes

Every figure here describes a group, not a household. Within any group the spread is wide, and being above the average for your property type is common rather than alarming.

Two identical houses on the same street can differ by a factor of two on occupancy and habits alone: how many people live there, what temperature they keep the place at, how long the heating runs, whether anyone is home all day. None of that is visible in a property-type average.

There is also a practical limit worth stating. England and Wales and Scotland are reported through different exercises with different samples and periods, so we do not combine them into a Great Britain figure, and suppressed cells are shown as unavailable rather than as zero.

Turning kWh into a bill

Consumption on its own is only half the sum. Multiply annual kWh by your unit rate, add the daily standing charge for the year, and that is your bill.

Use your own annual figures if you have them — they are on your annual statement, and they beat any published group. If you do not, pick the group above that best matches your home and use that as a starting point. Then put the numbers through the energy bill calculator with the current price cap rates for your region.

Be aware the standing charge is fixed regardless of use, so a low-use household pays a much larger proportion of its bill in fixed daily charges. If that is you, it is worth reading whether a zero standing charge tariff makes sense.

Where the savings really are

The comparisons above point fairly clearly at where the money goes. Heat is the bulk of it, so anything that reduces heat loss or heating hours beats anything that targets appliances.

That ordering is unglamorous but reliable: insulation and draughtproofing first, then heating controls and getting the flow temperature right, then the thermostat setting, and only then the appliances. Switching supplier is worth doing and takes twenty minutes, but it changes the price rather than the use — the two are separate levers and it is worth pulling both.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does the average UK household use?

Ofgem’s medium-consumption assumption is the figure most commonly quoted, and it is what the price cap headline is built on. The DESNZ figures on this page break it down much further, by property type, size, age, tenure and EPC band, which is far more useful than a single national average.

How much gas does a typical home use?

Gas use is dominated by heating, so it varies more between homes than electricity does and swings much harder between a mild and a cold winter. A large detached house can use several times what a flat uses, on the same tariff and with the same habits.

Is my energy use normal?

Compare against a group that resembles your home rather than the national average — same property type, roughly the same size, similar age. If you are well above a comparable group, the usual culprits are insulation, heating controls and how long the heating runs, in that order.

Why is my usage higher than the typical figure?

The published figures are averages across large groups, and real homes spread widely around them. Floor area, insulation, how many people are home during the day, whether you heat with gas or electricity, and whether anyone works from home all move it. Being above average is common and not in itself a problem.

Does an EPC rating tell me what I will actually use?

Only loosely. An EPC is a modelled assessment of the building, not a measurement of the household in it. Two homes with the same band can use very different amounts depending on who lives there and how they run the heating.
