Ecotricity Review (September 2026)

Overview
Ecotricity offers fast phone support and good Trustpilot scores, but its poorly rated mobile apps and mixed Which? results mean it will not suit everyone.
Who are Ecotricity?
Started in 1995 by Dale Vince, Ecotricity is based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. It is one of the UK's oldest green energy suppliers and has grown to become one of the UK's most recognised ethical energy brands.
What sets it apart is its "not-for-dividend" model, which uses customer bills to fund new wind and solar parks across Britain. It is the world's first energy supplier to offer certified vegan energy, ensuring no animal by-products make up its supply chain. The supplier won the Best Customer Service Small Supplier award at the Uswitch Energy Awards in 2026. It was also named a Which? Eco Provider in 2026, marking the sixth year in a row it has received this endorsement.[1][2]

Customer reviews
Ecotricity holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.2 out of 5 across 6,635 reviews. Approximately 66% of users award five stars, while 22% leave one-star ratings. The supplier responds to 94% of negative feedback, typically within 24 hours.
Positive feedback frequently highlights helpful staff and a straightforward onboarding process, with users noting the ease of reaching human agents by phone. Conversely, critical reviews cite instances of poor communication, unhelpful interactions, and concerns over pricing or direct debit charges.
The supplier achieved an overall score of 66 in the annual Which? survey. While it earned 9 out of 10 for supporting customers who need extra help, it received lower ratings elsewhere: 3 out of 5 for value for money, 2 out of 5 for overall customer service, and just 1 out of 5 for its switching process.
Apps
Ecotricity’s smartphone applications currently hold low user ratings. The iOS version scores 1.8 out of 5 from 111 ratings, while the Google Play Store equivalent sits at 2.8 out of 5 across 182 reviews. Both platforms have received recent software updates.
A sample of recent iOS feedback averages 1.7 stars. These users report difficulties following an app update, specifically noting the loss of historical usage data and an inability to view previous meter readings when submitting new figures.
Service and support
Ranking 7th overall, Ecotricity holds a Citizens Advice score of 3.36 out of 5. The supplier maintains an average call centre wait time of 45 seconds and answers 95% of emails within two days.
Data shows the firm receives 21.5 complaints per 10,000 customers. It also maintains formal vulnerability commitments with Citizens Advice, agreeing to specific standards for supporting households that require additional assistance.
Support lines operate from 9am to 7pm on weekdays, and between 9am and 5pm on weekends. Accepted payment methods include Direct Debit, cash, cheque, and prepayment.
Ecotricity complaints and performance
In Q1 2026, Ecotricity received 291 complaints for every 100,000 customers. The supplier resolved 41% of these by the end of the next working day, and 98% within eight weeks.
Top reasons for complaints
Customer service was the main cause of complaints, making up 34% of the total.
Billing and meter readings were the second most common issue, causing 23% of complaints.
Credit management accounted for 12% of the complaints Ecotricity received.
Problems with meters, such as installation, exchange, or faults, made up 11% of the total.
Payments caused 6% of the complaints during this period.
Green energy
Ecotricity supplies a 100% renewable electricity mix. It generates some of this power directly from its own wind and solar parks across Britain, and buys the rest from other renewable generators. Its vegan certification ensures that its renewable energy generation does not rely on animal waste or by-products.
For gas, the supplier gives customers a mix of sustainable green gas and fossil gas. To help balance the environmental impact of the fossil gas it supplies, the company invests in direct carbon removal projects in Britain through its Carbon Bank. It is also working to build its own green gasmills to make gas from grass, with the aim of replacing fossil gas entirely.
Through its "Bills into Mills" scheme, the supplier invests its profits back into building new green energy infrastructure. All of its domestic tariffs are green and vegan-certified.
Verdict
Ecotricity offers fast phone support and good Trustpilot scores, but its poorly rated mobile apps and mixed Which? results mean it will not suit everyone.
Ecotricity provides fast phone support and maintains strong Trustpilot scores, driven by praise for its helpful staff. However, this is balanced by poorly rated smartphone apps and a low customer service score of 2 out of 5 in the annual Which? survey.
The supplier may suit households that prioritise quick access to human support and value its model of funding new wind and solar parks. Conversely, those who prefer managing their energy accounts via a highly rated mobile application might want to explore alternative providers.

Hi, I'm Rob, and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project in 2018 when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data-backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I have spent a lot of time (too much, some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible, and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy-related topics, which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
