About this cookie policy

This policy explains what cookies are, which ones this site uses, and how you can change your mind at any time. For everything else we do with your data, see our Privacy Policy.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small files a website stores on your device. Some are needed for the site to work. Others are optional and only used if you agree to them. A few of the things described here are stored in your browser's local storage rather than as a cookie, but the same rules apply, so we cover them together.

What we use

We group what we store into two categories. You choose whether to allow the second one.

Necessary — always on

These do the bare minimum needed to run the site and to respect the choices you have already made. They do not track you, and we cannot switch them off.

What is storedWho sets itHow long it lastsWhat it does
exit_popup_dismissed_v…Energy Review30 daysRemembers that you closed our on-site offer notice, so we do not show it to you again.
stcm.consent.analyticsEnergy ReviewUntil you clear itRemembers whether you accepted or rejected analytics, so we do not ask again on every page. Stored in your browser's local storage.

Analytics — off unless you accept

These help us see which pages people find useful and where the site is confusing. They are only set after you accept them on the cookie banner. If you reject, or ignore the banner, none of them are set.

Who sets itWhat it does
Google AnalyticsMeasures visits and which pages are read, so we know what to improve. Google's own list of the cookies it sets is on the Google Analytics cookie usage page.
Microsoft ClarityRecords anonymised page interactions, so we can see where a layout is causing problems. Microsoft documents these on the Clarity cookie list.

What we do not use

We do not show adverts on this site, so there are no advertising or marketing cookies. We do not use cookies to build a profile of you, to personalise adverts, or to follow you across other websites, and we do not sell your data. Advertising storage is switched off permanently in our tag configuration, not just until you decline it.

We fund the site through affiliate links instead. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains how that works.

Measurement that does not use cookies

We also count page views, clicks on outbound supplier links, and whether our on-site notice was shown. This happens on our server, from the request your browser already sends. It stores nothing on your device, so it sits outside the cookie banner. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is recorded and how to object to it.

How to change your choice

Select Manage cookies at the bottom of any page. That reopens the banner, where you can accept or reject analytics. Your choice takes effect straight away, applies across the whole site, and you can change it as often as you like.

Controlling cookies in your browser

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Every major browser lets you do this, and each publishes its own instructions:

Blocking necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working as intended.
