Reading the prices

What the figures mean

Electricity and gas

Both prices use pence per kilowatt-hour. Electricity is priced by the half-hour; gas is a daily figure published afterwards. Keep those different periods in mind when comparing the graphs.

Check the date

The cards show the latest price available for each fuel. The date beside each price tells you when it applies. “Source checked” tells you when we last looked for an update.

What does p/kWh mean?

Pence per kilowatt-hour: the cost of one unit of energy. On a household tariff, a rate that is 1p/kWh higher adds 10p to the cost of using 10 kWh. Standing charges are extra.

On your bill

How do household rates compare?

Your bill uses your tariff’s unit rates and daily standing charges. Choose your region to see Ofgem’s price-cap rates for Direct Debit customers. This changes the household figures below; the wholesale charts cover Great Britain.

Showing GB average

Electricity price-cap average

26.32 p/kWh

Standing charge: 54.83 p/day

Gas price-cap average

7.97 p/kWh

Standing charge: 29.68 p/day

GB average; Direct Debit, including applicable tax. Electricity is single-rate. Applies 1 Oct 2026 to 31 Dec 2026. The standing charge is paid each day, on top of the energy you use. Your own tariff may have different rates. The cap does not limit your total bill.

Common questions

About these prices

Why is the gas price from an earlier day?

National Gas publishes a daily price after the gas day it covers. We check for updates every 15 minutes, but the latest published figure may still be from an earlier day. The date beside the price tells you which gas day it covers.

Will my bill change when these prices move?

That depends on your tariff. Your supplier charges the unit rates and standing charges set out in your agreement. A rise or fall in this wholesale graph does not, by itself, change those rates. Check your supplier’s published prices to see what you will pay.

What does a negative electricity price mean?

The wholesale Market Index Price was below zero for that half-hour. Whether you benefit from it depends on your tariff. A negative wholesale price does not automatically mean you will be paid to use electricity.

Why are there gaps in the graph?

We do not have a usable price for those periods. Missing figures are left blank. The longer electricity charts also leave out days with incomplete data. Open the data table to see which figures are missing.

National Gas publishes the System Average Price for the On-the-Day Commodity Market. Its “SAP, Actual Day” series (PUBOB603) is already in p/kWh.

Each figure covers one gas day and is published afterwards. The graph uses National Gas’s published history, with the latest available day shown above.
