Who are OVO Energy?

OVO Energy was founded in 2009 in Bristol and is part of the OVO Group. In May 2026, E.ON announced plans to buy the supplier's UK energy retail business. Through its own growth and after it bought SSE's retail energy branch in 2020, it has become one of the UK's largest domestic energy suppliers.

What sets OVO Energy apart is its focus on smart technology and customer rewards. It runs the OVO Beyond loyalty scheme, which gives customers perks and savings towards home upgrades like solar panels. It also offers a Power Move scheme, which rewards households for shifting their electricity use to off-peak times when the grid is greener.

According to Citizens Advice data from January to March 2026, OVO Energy's electricity fuel mix is largely fossil fuels, with some renewable and nuclear energy.

In 2023, the supplier stopped offering 100% renewable electricity backed solely by certificates as standard, stating this does not do enough to help reach net zero. Instead, customers can pay extra for a Greener Electricity upgrade. This supplies 100% renewable electricity backed by agreements with independent UK generators and includes a yearly payment to help new generators get set up.[1]

OVO Energy has a Plan Zero strategy to reach net zero by 2035. It aims to do this by cutting its carbon emissions by 90% and offsetting the remaining 10%. As part of its environmental work, the company says it has planted 5 million trees in the UK since 2015.[2]

Verdict

OVO Energy is highly rated on Trustpilot and offers a well-regarded iOS app, but poor independent scores from Which? suggest its customer service and value for money could be improved.

OVO Energy presents a mixed profile for households considering a switch. While its Trustpilot rating is high and its iOS app is well received, independent assessments highlight areas of concern. Low Which? scores for customer service and value for money, combined with a poorly rated Android app, indicate that the customer experience may vary.

This supplier may suit households that manage their accounts via an iPhone and value strong support for customers requiring extra help. Conversely, those who use Android devices or prioritise highly rated general customer service and clear billing statements might prefer to compare alternative providers.

Hi, I'm Rob, and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project in 2018 when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data-backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I have spent a lot of time (too much, some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible, and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy-related topics, which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
