The economics are the same — buy low, store, sell high — but the outcome depends on Octopus’s scheduling rather than yours, and on your battery being one it can control.

How Intelligent Octopus Flux works
Octopus takes control of when the battery charges from the grid and when it discharges, aiming to buy when import is cheap and sell when export pays most.
It factors in forecast solar generation, so on a sunny day it can leave room for your own production rather than filling the battery from the grid overnight.
Your household usage is still billed on the underlying band schedule shown above; the automation applies to the battery, not to the rest of the house.

- Solar or another form of generation, with an export arrangement in place
- A smart meter sending half-hourly readings

Things to watch
- You hand over control of an expensive piece of equipment. If you have strong views about how your battery should be charged and discharged, this is not the tariff for you.
- Compatibility is narrower than for Intelligent Go, since it depends on the battery system rather than a vehicle.
- Charging and discharging a battery more often uses up its warranty life. More cycles earn more, but check your warranty terms before you sign up.
Intelligent Octopus Flux compared with the alternatives
- Against Octopus Flux
- Identical economics, different amount of work. Flux leaves the schedule to you; Intelligent Flux leaves it to Octopus. Choose on whether you want the control or the convenience — and on whether your battery is compatible at all.
- Against Intelligent Octopus Go
- Different assets: Intelligent Go schedules a car, Intelligent Flux schedules a battery. If you have both, you will have to decide which is worth optimising, since you cannot be on both tariffs.
- Against Agile with Outgoing
- More upside in theory and far more work in practice. Intelligent Flux is the automated middle path for a solar and battery home that does not want to trade energy daily.

- Confirm your battery system is one Octopus can control — this is the deciding factor and worth checking before anything else.

Our verdict on Intelligent Octopus Flux
Intelligent Flux hands battery scheduling to Octopus, who charge and discharge against wholesale prices rather than a fixed timetable. Done well that beats a schedule you set yourself, because prices move and a timetable does not.
It only applies to a short list of battery systems, and you are giving up day-to-day control of an expensive asset. If your battery is not on the list, or you would rather run it yourself, Flux is the same idea under your own hand.
