FreePhase Dynamic prices electricity in half-hour blocks. Rather than one rate holding for months, there are 48 prices a day, set from what electricity costs on the wholesale market, and published before the day they apply to.

It is EDF’s answer to the half-hourly tariffs that smaller suppliers built their reputations on, and the prices above are the real ones for the region you have selected — electricity is priced regionally, so a household in Yorkshire and one in London are not on the same rates.

How EDF FreePhase Dynamic works

Wholesale prices are converted into a retail price for each half hour, with network costs, EDF’s margin and VAT added on top. The result is published ahead of the day it covers, so the prices you are looking at for tomorrow are the prices you will pay.

Because the price moves every half hour, the tariff rewards moving consumption rather than simply using less. The cheapest continuous window shown above is the stretch of the day when running a dishwasher, a washing machine or a car charger costs least.

On top of the half-hourly pricing, EDF runs occasional free electricity sessions — the "FreePhase" the tariff is named for. These are announced rather than scheduled, so they are a bonus to look out for rather than something to build a routine around.

The standing charge is reviewed every three months and includes a service fee, which is a genuine difference from most half-hourly tariffs: the daily charge is not simply the regional network cost passed through, and it can move independently of the unit rates.

Things to watch

  • Prices peak in the late afternoon and early evening, which is when most homes want heat, light and dinner. That is the central risk of any half-hourly tariff.
  • The twelve-month term does not fix your prices. It fixes the arrangement; the rates move every half hour throughout.
  • The standing charge can change every three months and contains a service fee, so a like-for-like comparison against another tariff has to include it rather than stopping at the unit rate.
  • If your usage pattern does not change, a half-hourly tariff can cost more than the standard variable one it replaced.

EDF FreePhase Dynamic compared with the alternatives

Against Agile Octopus
The same idea from a different supplier: half-hourly, wholesale-linked, published a day ahead. Agile has years of published history behind it and a hard cap on how high a half hour can go; FreePhase Dynamic is newer, adds occasional free electricity sessions, and puts a service fee inside a standing charge that is reset quarterly. Compare the standing charges as carefully as the unit rates — on a tariff you might use lightly in the cheap hours, the daily charge is the part you cannot avoid.
Against EDF FreePhase Static
Same product line, opposite trade. Static gives you fixed bands you can plan a week around; Dynamic gives you the genuinely cheapest hours, but you have to look them up. If you would not check prices, Static will serve you better.
Against EDF Standard Variable
The honest baseline. Standard Variable sits at the price cap and asks nothing of you. Dynamic beats it for a household that shifts a real share of its usage and loses to it for one that does not — there is no version of this where the tariff does the work for you.

Getting the most out of EDF FreePhase Dynamic

Use the delay timers already in the machines

Load the dishwasher or washing machine in the evening and set the delay so it runs in the cheap overnight hours. This is the single change that moves the most consumption for the least effort, and it needs no new hardware.

Move the heat, not the lights

Lighting and televisions draw very little. It is the heat-generating appliances that matter — the oven, the kettle, the immersion heater, the tumble dryer. Shifting one oven-cooked meal out of the evening peak saves more than switching off every standby light in the house.

Automate the car

If you drive electric, set the car or the charger to draw power only below a price you choose. Charging is usually the biggest single load in the house and the easiest one to schedule.

Next-day prices appear on this page as soon as EDF publishes them. A minute spent looking at the shape of tomorrow is what turns the tariff from a gamble into a plan.

How to switch to EDF FreePhase Dynamic

  1. Check first that you have a smart meter sending half-hourly readings. EDF can switch a meter from daily to half-hourly reads, but the tariff cannot bill without them.
  2. Apply through EDF directly. A domestic switch usually completes within five working days.
  3. There are no exit fees, so if half-hourly pricing does not suit you in practice you can move away without penalty — worth knowing before you commit, because the twelve-month term reads like a lock-in and is not one.

Our verdict on EDF FreePhase Dynamic

FreePhase Dynamic is a real half-hourly tariff rather than a headline, and EDF publishing its rates openly is what makes a page like this possible at all. For a household with a battery, an electric car, or simply the discipline to keep the oven out of the early evening, it can come in below the cap.

What it does not do is fix anything. The twelve-month term fixes the agreement, not the price; the standing charge is reset quarterly and carries a service fee. Read it as a tariff for people who will act on the prices, because for anyone who will not, the standard variable tariff is cheaper and quieter.
