FreePhase Static splits the day into bands and holds each one for twelve months. There is a cheap overnight rate, a middle rate through the working day and evening, and a expensive band across the late afternoon.

It is the fixed half of EDF’s FreePhase line: the same idea as the dynamic version — pay less by using electricity at the right time — but with the times printed in advance instead of published daily. The schedule above is the live one for the region you have selected.

How EDF FreePhase Static works

The day is divided into bands with a set price each. The cheapest runs overnight, the dearest across the late afternoon and early evening, and a middle rate covers the rest. Those prices are fixed for the twelve months of the agreement, so unlike the standard variable tariff they do not move when the price cap does.

Because the bands never move, this is a tariff you can build a routine around rather than a tariff you have to check. The washing goes on overnight, the oven avoids the peak, and that is the whole of the discipline it asks for.

The standing charge is noticeably lower than the price cap allows, which matters more than it sounds: it is the part of the bill you pay whether you use any electricity or not, and it is where a low headline unit rate is often quietly taken back.

As with the dynamic version, EDF runs free electricity at selected times on this tariff. Those sessions sit on top of the banded pricing rather than replacing it.

  • A smart meter, since the bands have to be billed separately from one another
  • A twelve-month agreement, with no exit fees if you leave early
  • Electricity only — gas is a separate EDF tariff
  • Available across Great Britain, at prices that differ by distribution region

What drives what you pay

  • How much of your usage lands in the late-afternoon peak band, which is the most expensive electricity EDF sells to a domestic customer
  • How much you can move into the overnight band, which is where the saving actually comes from
  • The standing charge, which is lower here than on most EDF tariffs and applies every day regardless
  • Nothing to do with the wholesale market or the price cap for the length of the term — the prices are set

Who it tends to suit

  • Households that can reliably keep the oven, dryer and dishwasher out of the late afternoon
  • People who want time-of-use pricing without having to look anything up
  • Homes that do most of their heavy electrical work in the evening after the peak or overnight
  • Anyone who values a low standing charge — particularly a second home or a low-usage household

Who it tends not to suit

  • Households cooking and washing between four and seven in the evening, every day
  • Anyone who would rather track the market and take the genuinely cheapest hours
  • Homes without a smart meter
  • Anyone who expects to benefit if the price cap falls during the term

Things to watch

  • The peak band is expensive — substantially above the standard variable rate — and it covers exactly the hours most households cook and heat in. A home that cannot avoid it will pay more here than on a flat tariff.
  • Fixed prices cut both ways. If the price cap falls over the next year, you stay where you are while the standard variable tariff comes down.
  • The free electricity sessions are a real benefit but not a schedulable one, so do not count them into a comparison.

EDF FreePhase Static compared with the alternatives

Against EDF FreePhase Dynamic
The two halves of the same idea. Static prints the times, Dynamic finds them. Static wins for a household that wants to set a routine once; Dynamic wins for one that will act on tomorrow’s prices, and it is the only one of the two that can reach the very cheapest hours.
Against Cosy Octopus
Both are banded tariffs with cheap windows and an expensive peak, and both are aimed at households that can move heat around. Cosy is built around a heat pump’s daily cycle with cheap windows in the early morning and afternoon; FreePhase Static puts its cheap band overnight, which suits general household use and car charging better than it suits heating.
Against EDF Standard Variable
Standard Variable has one rate all day at the price cap. FreePhase Static is cheaper than that overnight and considerably dearer in the peak, so which one wins is decided entirely by when you use electricity rather than how much.

Getting the most out of EDF FreePhase Static

Learn one boundary, not the whole schedule

The only time that really matters is when the peak band starts. If nothing heat-generating runs between then and the evening rate returning, you have captured most of the benefit of the tariff.

Push the big loads past the peak, not through it

Dinner at six on an electric hob is the expensive habit. Cooking earlier, cooking later, or using a slow cooker through the day all avoid the same band.

Let the overnight band earn its keep

Immersion heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and car chargers all run perfectly well on a timer. Everything you move into the overnight band is bought at the cheapest rate on the tariff.

How to switch to EDF FreePhase Static

  1. You need a smart meter. EDF will arrange one if you do not have it, but the tariff cannot bill banded rates without it.
  2. Apply directly through EDF; a domestic switch usually completes within five working days.
  3. There are no exit fees, so if the peak band turns out to catch more of your day than you expected you can move away without a charge.

Our verdict on EDF FreePhase Static

FreePhase Static is the more forgiving of EDF’s two FreePhase tariffs, and the low standing charge is a genuine advantage that headline comparisons tend to miss. For a household that can keep the late afternoon clear, it is a straightforward way to pay less without watching prices.

The peak band is unforgiving though, and it is priced well above the standard variable rate rather than a little above it. This is a tariff to take because your routine already avoids the early evening, not one to take hoping you will change.
