Heat Pump Tracker is sold only to households with an air source heat pump. It takes EDF’s standard variable rate and takes 10p a unit off in two windows — one in the early morning, one in the early afternoon — and charges the standard rate the rest of the time.

What it does not have is a peak band. Unlike almost every other time-of-use tariff, there is no window where electricity costs more than standard, which is a deliberate choice for a heating load you cannot always postpone.

How EDF Heat Pump Tracker works

The base rate follows the Ofgem price cap, moving quarterly with EDF’s standard variable tariff rather than with the wholesale market. The two discount windows subtract a fixed 10p per kWh from whatever that base happens to be.

The windows are placed where a heat pump can use them: one in the early morning, before the house needs to be warm, and one in the early afternoon, when a well-insulated house can be pushed a degree or two above target and left to coast through the evening.

The absence of an expensive band is the design. A heat pump running through a cold evening is not doing anything optional, and a tariff that charged a peak rate for it would penalise the very load it was sold for.

The agreement runs for thirty-six months with no exit fees, which is a long commitment on paper and a light one in practice.

Things to watch

  • The discount windows only pay if the heat pump actually runs in them. A system left on a simple thermostat with no schedule will drift through them and collect very little.
  • Pre-heating a leaky house wastes more than the discount saves. This tariff rewards insulation as much as it rewards scheduling.
  • It tracks the price cap, so it will not fall on a windy night the way a wholesale-linked tariff does.
  • The thirty-six month term is long. There are no exit fees, but it is worth checking the terms yourself before committing three years to any supplier.

Against Cosy Octopus
The closest thing to a like-for-like comparison in the market: both are heat-pump tariffs with cheap windows placed around a heating cycle. Cosy is priced independently of the cap and does have expensive hours; Heat Pump Tracker discounts against the cap and has none. Cosy can go lower; this one cannot go higher, which for a heating load you cannot defer is worth something.
Against EDF Heat Pump & Save Tracker
The same rates on a twelve-month term with no standing charge for the year, but sold only to households installing an Ideal heat pump. If you qualify for it, it is the better of the two; if you already own a heat pump of another make, this is the one open to you.
Against EDF Standard Variable
Identical base rate, with two discount windows added and nothing taken away. For a heat pump household that can schedule at all, this is straightforwardly the better tariff — there is no peak band for the discount to be paid for out of.

Getting the most out of EDF Heat Pump Tracker

Schedule the pump, do not just set a temperature

Ask the heat pump to do its heaviest work inside the two discount windows and to coast the rest of the time. A controller that only knows a target temperature will heat whenever the house cools, which is exactly what this tariff is trying to move.

Push a degree above target in the afternoon window

A well-insulated house that reaches slightly above target in the early afternoon will still be comfortable through the evening without the pump running much at all. That is the single most valuable habit on this tariff.

Heat the water in the morning window

Hot water is a storable load and the early-morning window is a discounted one. Moving the cylinder’s reheat there costs nothing to arrange and saves on every tank.

  1. You need an air source heat pump; EDF checks eligibility when you apply.
  2. A smart meter with half-hourly readings is required, and EDF provides one at no extra cost if you do not have it.
  3. Set the heat pump’s schedule before the tariff starts rather than after. The discount windows are the whole value of the tariff and an unscheduled system will miss both.
  4. There are no exit fees, so the thirty-six month term does not trap you if your circumstances change.

Our verdict on EDF Heat Pump Tracker

Heat Pump Tracker is a sensible piece of tariff design. Discounting two windows and adding no peak means a heat pump household can save by scheduling without being punished on the evenings when the weather decides the heating runs anyway.

It will not reach the lows a wholesale-linked tariff can, and it asks for three years. But for the household it is aimed at — an air source heat pump, a schedulable controller, a house that holds heat — there is very little to argue with.
