What this comparison covers

The supported supplier APIs currently give us comparable regional product prices for Octopus Energy and EDF Energy. We include their dedicated EV propositions and exclude general tariffs that merely happen to work with a car. Other UK suppliers are not represented, so the result must not be read as the whole market.

Electricity prices differ by distribution region, so this changes every figure below.

Each estimate applies the same derived “electric car charged overnight” shape to 5,000 kWh a year and includes the standing charge. It does not include a charger, installation, finance, exit fees or rewards.

How to choose an EV tariff

Start with when the car is actually at home

A cheap overnight rate only helps electricity that lands in its window. Check arrival time, required departure charge and whether a supplier-controlled schedule is compatible with the car or charger.

Price the whole home, not one charge

The day rate and standing charge apply around the headline cheap hours. A tariff can make the car cheaper and the rest of the home dearer, which is why the comparison uses combined annual use.

Separate energy from hardware

Charger bundles can be useful, but their installation scope, warranty, finance and exit terms are a second decision. Never treat an energy-only annual estimate as the bundle’s total cost.

Use your own half-hourly readings where possible

A named profile is an assumption. If you have smart-meter data, the tariff replay measures your pattern in the browser instead.

Current supplier checks

Before switching, check the supplier’s current eligibility and hardware terms. EDF says GoElectric needs a connected smart meter and is for EV drivers; its Plug & Power offer combines energy with a Pod charger. Octopus publishes separate smart-tariff terms and live compatibility checks for managed charging.

Frequently asked questions

Does this compare every EV tariff in the UK?

No. It compares dedicated EV tariffs from Octopus Energy and EDF Energy because those are the suppliers whose regional product prices the site currently reads from supported supplier APIs. Other suppliers may offer competitive EV tariffs, so this page is a transparent data comparison rather than a whole-market claim.

Why does the comparison use one overnight profile?

Every tariff is scored against exactly the same derived pattern: an ordinary household plus car charging from 11:30pm to 5:30am. Following each tariff’s own cheapest window would flatter every tariff in a different way and make the results impossible to compare.

What annual electricity figure should I enter?

Use the combined electricity your home and car take from the meter in a year. If the car is new, estimate its metered charging separately with the EV charging calculator, including charging losses, and add that to the household figure from a recent bill.

Are charger purchase and installation costs included?

No. The annual figures cover metered electricity and the tariff standing charge only. A charger-and-tariff bundle such as EDF Pod Point Plug & Power must be judged with its hardware price, installation scope, contract term and exit conditions added separately.

Does the cheapest figure predict my next bill?

No. It models what the available history would have cost on the stated profile. New product issues with short histories are kept in a separate group and are not ranked alongside tariffs with enough comparable data.
