Who are OVO Energy?

OVO Energy was set up in 2009 and is one of the UK's largest domestic energy suppliers. The company expanded organically and through its 2020 acquisition of SSE's retail business. In May 2026, its parent group announced an agreement to sell its energy retail business to E.ON.

What sets the supplier apart is its rewards programme, OVO Beyond. This scheme gives customers access to perks such as gig tickets, free electric vehicle charging miles, and discounts on solar panels. It also runs Power Move, which gives eligible customers prize-draw entries for shifting non-essential electricity use away from weekday peak times.[1]

Green energy approach

Based on Citizens Advice data for January to March 2026, OVO Energy's electricity fuel mix is largely fossil fuels, with some renewable and nuclear energy. In 2023, the supplier stopped offering 100% renewable electricity backed by certificates as standard, stating that this approach does not do enough to help the UK reach net zero.

Customers who want renewable energy can add a greener electricity upgrade to specific fixed tariffs. This matches the electricity used with 100% renewable energy and includes a £40 yearly contribution to help independent renewable power generators in the UK. The company is also working towards becoming a net zero business by 2035 through its Plan Zero strategy, and states that it has planted over five million trees in the UK since 2015 on behalf of its customers (OVO Energy).[1]

Verdict

OVO Energy pairs strong Trustpilot ratings and a highly rated iOS app with a solid Citizens Advice score, though its Which? survey results are weaker.

OVO Energy combines high Trustpilot ratings with a moderate Citizens Advice ranking and a well-received iOS app. However, its performance in the Which? survey is less competitive, particularly regarding value for money and general customer service.

This supplier may suit households looking for robust digital tools on Apple devices and targeted support for vulnerable customers. Those who prioritise high Which? scores or rely on Android applications might want to compare alternative providers.

Hi, I'm Rob, and I run Energy-Review.co.uk. I initially started this project in 2018 when I was looking to switch energy suppliers and found there wasn't a website that provided simple, data-backed reviews on all the suppliers available. Since then, I have spent a lot of time (too much, some may say!) looking at all publicly available data about each supplier and writing reviews using this information. These reviews are updated as regularly as possible, and any data is backed up by a source where necessary. I have also started writing guides on various energy-related topics, which hopefully you will find useful. If you find any issues, please use our contact form to let us know.
