Go Electric gives you seven hours of very cheap electricity every night, from 11pm to 6am, and a single higher rate the rest of the day. It is built for charging an electric car overnight, and the night rate is low enough that a full charge costs a few pounds.
The trade is explicit: the daytime rate is well above the price cap. Everything this tariff saves you at night, it can take back during the day if too much of your usage falls there.

How EDF Go Electric works
Two rates, one boundary. From 11pm to 6am you pay the night rate; from 6am to 11pm you pay the day rate. Both are fixed for the twelve months of the agreement, so neither moves with the price cap.
The night rate is a charging rate rather than an off-peak rate — it is a fraction of what electricity costs at any other hour, and low enough to make the fuel cost of an electric car a small fraction of running a petrol one.
The day rate is the price of that. It sits meaningfully above what a standard variable customer pays, so the tariff only works out if a large share of your electricity is genuinely being used at night. For a household charging a car most nights that is usually easy; for one that is not, it rarely is.
Unlike EDF’s Tracker tariffs, this one carries an exit fee — charged per fuel — so leaving mid-term costs money.

- Anyone whose electricity use is concentrated in the daytime and evening
- Anyone who might want to leave early, given the exit fee
Things to watch
- The day rate is well above the price cap. This is not a tariff to hold "just in case" — without a genuine overnight load it will cost you more than doing nothing.
- Seven hours is a fixed window, not a smart one. If your car needs a longer charge you will be paying day rates for the overspill.
- There is an exit fee, charged per fuel, which makes this the least reversible of EDF’s smart tariffs.
- Fixing for twelve months means no benefit if the price cap falls during the term.
EDF Go Electric compared with the alternatives
- Against Octopus Go
- The same shape from a different supplier — a cheap overnight block and a higher day rate. The comparison comes down to three numbers on the day: the night rate, the day rate and the length of the window. Octopus Go has no exit fee, which matters if you are not certain the arrangement will suit you.
- Against EDF Pod Power
- EDF’s cheapest EV tariff, with a lower night rate on the same seven-hour window — but sold only to Pod Point customers. If you have a Pod charger it is the better deal; if you do not, Go Electric is the one open to you.
- Against EDF FreePhase Dynamic
- Dynamic can reach cheaper half hours than this tariff’s night rate on a good night, and much worse ones on a bad one. Go Electric gives you a fixed cheap block you can rely on for twelve months. For a driver who wants to plug in and stop thinking about it, the certainty is usually worth more than the upside.
Getting the most out of EDF Go Electric
Schedule the car, not just the charger
Most cars and most chargers can both hold a schedule, and if the two disagree the car usually wins. Set the one that actually controls the charge, then check the following morning that it did what you asked.
Fill the seven hours with more than the car
The dishwasher, the washing machine and the immersion heater all run happily on a delay timer. Once the tariff is paying for itself on the car, everything else you move into the window is pure saving.
Work out your break-even before you switch
Take your annual usage, guess honestly at how much lands between 11pm and 6am, and price it both ways against the standard variable rate. If less than about a third of your electricity is overnight, the day rate will usually eat the saving.
How to switch to EDF Go Electric
- You need a smart meter; EDF will arrange one if you do not have it.
- Apply directly through EDF. A domestic switch usually completes within five working days.
- Set the car or the charger to draw power only between 11pm and 6am before the tariff starts. A car that charges on arrival home rather than on a schedule will buy its electricity at the day rate.
- Note the exit fee before committing. It is charged per fuel, so a dual-fuel household leaving early pays it twice.
Our verdict on EDF Go Electric
For a household that charges an electric car at home most nights, Go Electric does exactly what it says: it makes the fuel cost of driving very small, on a fixed rate you can rely on for a year.
For anyone else it is an expensive tariff. The day rate sits above the price cap and covers seventeen hours out of every twenty-four, so this is a decision that turns entirely on whether you genuinely have a large overnight load — and the exit fee means getting it wrong costs more than switching back.

How is this different from Pod Power and Plug & Power?
Pod Power has a lower night rate on the same window but is sold only to Pod Point customers. Plug & Power bundles a Pod Point charger: you pay some of the hardware upfront and the rest through a much higher daily standing charge across twenty-four months. Go Electric is the version with no hardware attached.
