Quick OVO Energy Review overview:
OVO Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers, offering fixed, variable, and time-of-use tariffs, along with renewable upgrades and bundle deals.
For an average home, OVO’s cheapest current plan is its 1 Year Fixed at £143 a month, with the 2 Year Fixed and Simpler Energy variable tariffs costing slightly more. Customers can also add extras such as Greener Electricity (£80/year) or boiler cover.
OVO scores highly on Trustpilot (over 230,000 reviews, rated Excellent) but ranks lower in Which? satisfaction surveys, while Citizens Advice places it mid-table. As a signatory to the Energy Switch Guarantee, most switches are completed within five working days.
Who are OVO Energy?
OVO Energy was founded in 2009 with a focus on providing greener and cheaper energy services.
They put a strong emphasis on simplicity, so if anyone finds navigating energy suppliers and tariffs difficult, OVO Energy could be the supplier for you. Electric and gas services are available throughout the UK on both pre-payment tariffs and credit tariffs on both fixed and variable rates.
OVO Energy proudly promotes its 100% renewable energy offering, making it a great choice for those seeking a greener, more environmentally friendly supplier. They stopped using REGO certificates (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) in 2023 because they view those as Greenwashing. Ovo Energy aim to be net zero by 2035.
However, OVO Energy only offers 100% renewable energy on its Greener Electricity tariff, which is an 18-month fixed tariff with a £75 exit fee per fuel. Having said that, a “Greener Energy” upgrade is available on their other tariffs.
They also offer a variety of other products, including upgrades, electric car services, smart storage heaters, and home energy storage.

What tariffs do OVO Energy offer?
OVO Energy offers a variable tariff with no exit fee and no minimum contract term. The prices are reviewed every three months.
OVO offers a range of fixed-rate tariffs alongside its standard variable plan. Availability changes throughout the year, but at the time of writing, fixed deals include:
- 12-month fixes with an exit fee of £50 per fuel
- 24-month fixes with an exit fee of £95 per fuel
Occasionally, OVO also offers 18-month fixes, but these are not always available. Exit fees are charged per fuel if you leave early.
OVO supports a variety of off-peak tariffs depending on your meter type and location:
- Economy 7 – cheaper electricity for a 7-hour overnight period.
- Off-Peak E/F – a legacy tariff offering 8–10.5 hours off-peak.
- Smart Economy 9 – 9 hours of off-peak electricity, available to some smart meter customers.
There is also a free add-on called Charge Anytime for electric vehicle owners. Despite the name, Charge Anytime means that if you have a compatible charger and charge your electric vehicle when the electricity is greener, you get charged less. However, if you need to charge your electric vehicle in a hurry, you can still do that, although you’ll pay your standard per-unit rate.
How do OVO Energy compare on price?
OVO Energy rarely offer one of the cheapest tariffs on the market. Generally, from our research on comparison sites, they sit around mid-table in terms of price.
Based on a property in the East Midlands using 3,000 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas per year, OVO’s quoted prices (including 5% VAT) are:
| Tariff | Monthly cost | Contract length | Exit fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Year Fixed | £143 | 12 months | £50 per fuel |
| 2 Year Fixed | £147 | 24 months | £95 per fuel |
| Simpler Energy | £148 | Rolling | None |
| 1 Year Fixed + Boiler Cover | £151 | 12 months | £50 per fuel |
| 1 Year Fixed + Greener Electricity | £149 | 12 months | £50 per fuel |
Notes:
- 1 Year Fixed – Fixed unit rates and standing charges for 12 months.
- 2 Year Fixed – Price security for two years.
- Simpler Energy – Standard variable tariff with no exit fees.
- 1 Year Fixed + Boiler Cover – Energy (£134/month) plus boiler cover (£17/month), including annual service and unlimited callouts. Claimed £100/year saving vs buying separately.
- 1 Year Fixed + Greener Electricity – Includes Greener Electricity upgrade for the price of 10 months (£80/year value), with 100% UK-generated renewable electricity and a £40/year contribution to support new renewable generators.
This example shows OVO’s 1 Year Fixed tariff is currently their cheapest energy-only option for this usage profile, at £143 per month, with the 2 Year Fixed costing £4 more per month. The Simpler Energy variable tariff is slightly more expensive than the 1 Year Fixed, and bundle deals cost more overall but add extras such as boiler cover or renewable upgrades.
What do other OVO Energy reviews say?
OVO Energy perform well on the third-party review site Trustpilot. They have over 230,000 reviews and an overall score of 4.6 out of 5, which is up from the 4.3 score that they had last time we reviewed them. 73% of reviewers rate them as Excellent, with only 10% rating them as bad.
In the latest survey by Which? for 2025, OVO ranked among the lowest-scoring suppliers overall. This was down from the 70% score that they had last time we reviewed them, and is below the score required for them to be a Which? Recommended Provider.
It’s a slightly better story from Citizens Advice, where for the period covering January–March 2025, Ovo Energy came 4th out of 16 energy suppliers with 3.6/5 stars.
What is OVO Energy’s customer service like?
For Pay-Monthly customers, OVO’s phone support is available 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday. Pay As You Go customers have extended phone support hours of 8am–8pm on weekdays and 9am–5pm on weekends. You can also message OVO online at any time, and the team will reply during working hours. According to Citizens Advice, they are currently answering calls in 1 minute and 9 seconds.
There’s also live chat via Ovo Energy, and you can contact them via email. According to Citizens Advice, they respond to 97.4% of emails within two days, an improvement from the 86.9% response time last time we reviewed them.
When it comes to complaints, Citizens Advice gives them 3/5 stars, as Ovo Energy receives a fairly high number of complaints at 45 per 10,000 customers. This nearly doubles the 28.1 complaints per 10,000 customers that they were receiving last time we reviewed them.
In 2024, an Ofgem investigation into complaints handling at Ovo Energy resulted in Ovo Energy having to pay £2.37 million in compensation.
Ovo Energy operate a Guaranteed Standards of Performance guarantee, which means that they’ll pay you £40 compensation if they let you down.
What is OVO Energy’s website/app like?
OVO Energy’s website is clean and modern, which makes it easy to navigate and find the information you’re looking for. The help and support section, in particular, is worthy of praise, and so is the discussion forum. We have seen other energy suppliers provide a discussion forum, but this is one of the best we have seen in terms of design and user activity.
OVO Energy has an app available for both iOS and Android devices. The iOS app is highly rated, achieving a 4.7/5 score from over 16,000 reviews. However, the Android app currently only has a 3/5. This is much lower than the 4.5/5 score last time we reviewed it, and it appears that a recent update has not gone down well with Ovo Energy’s Android customers.
How green is OVO Energy’s energy?
OVO’s Greener Electricity upgrade is now priced at £80 per year (around £6.67 per month) and is backed by UK power purchase agreements (PPAs), not REGOs. The aim is to support renewable generation directly and contribute towards OVO’s target of becoming a net-zero business by 2035.
If you don’t upgrade to the Greener Electricity option, 65% Ovo Energy’s electricity comes from:
- Natural Gas – 61%
- Coal – 13%
- Renewables – 11%
- Nuclear – 9%
- Other – 6%
Who OVO may be good for (and who it might not suit)
OVO could be a good choice if you:
- Prefer a large, established UK supplier with a strong track record and nationwide coverage.
- Value the option to add extras such as Greener Electricity or boiler cover to your energy plan.
- Want access to smart time-of-use tariffs like Charge Anytime for EV charging.
- Like the convenience of a well-rated mobile app (particularly on iOS) for account management.
- Want a supplier signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee for a smoother switching process.
OVO may not be the best fit if you:
- Are looking for the absolute cheapest rates on the market, some smaller suppliers can undercut OVO’s pricing.
- Prefer consistently high rankings in independent satisfaction surveys, OVO performs well on Trustpilot but has lower scores in Which? and mid-table results with Citizens Advice.
- Want innovative green tariffs as standard, OVO’s cheapest plans are not automatically 100% renewable unless you add Greener Electricity.
- Need extended customer service phone hours if you’re on a Pay-Monthly plan (hours are shorter than some competitors).

Terrible company, been trying to get resolution for billing for almost 2 year. We have a complex supply in that we have economy 7, the left at OVO doesn’t know what the right is doing, Staff fob me off with every call. Holding now trying to speak with resolutions team, been on the call for almost 35 minutes and been on hold at least 20-25 minutes. Would definitely NOT recommend OVO. The call last over over an hour in total with with 50 minutes or so on hold, still no resolution and will not give me timescale to solve, just saying as unbilled for long period they don’t have to give a timescale!! Appalling.
Ovo informed me after making regular monthly payments that I owed them £1400 in electricity due to a technical error on their end. I of course said wipe that debt as it was a fault in there end and o have been paying in good faith. I opened a customer complaint and was assured this would be done and I’d here nothing more. March comes 3 months later. They put my account into -£961, and informed me they have given me a 10% discount. In the email explaining this it states ‘due to a technical error’. I have paid monthly I have paid in full and now am told, because someone in there company made a mistake I owe them a huge sum of money. Single mum of two children in a pandemic who has never even paid late let alone missed a payment. Disgusting and legal action will be taken.
Do not sign up to @OVOEnergy called ‘trying to save me money’ telling me to adjust my boiler, this then racked up a debt of £360 on top of normal usuage which they admitted was a member of their staffs fault but still expect me to pay. Not genuine don’t trust them
Ovo are rubbish at customer service. They have been promising a meter change (faulty smart meter) for 18 months (Excluding Covid period)and failed in every expected respect of their promised service. This is a zero star company!
I was forced onto OVO because my old supplier Economy Energy went bust. I was forced to stay with OVO for 6-7 months. I was stuck on a variable high tariff waiting for OVO as they refused to allow me to switch providers or change my tariff and I was never in debit. They owe me £375.95 plus interest. I base a company based on their customer support in this case my complaint was ignored for a year a whole year.
